Smith Gets 100th Hit As Baseball Swept By Elms

HOLYOKE, Mass. - Shawn Smith (Shelton, Conn.) collected his 100th career hit for the Albertus Magnus College baseball team, but the Falcons lost both ends of a doubleheader, 10-6 and 7-6 to Elms College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.

Smith finished game one, 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI. Vance Ward (Norwalk, Conn.) was a combined 4-for-9 in the doubleheader with three runs and an RBI. Eddy Garabito (Norwalk, Conn.) had three htis, two runs and three RBI over the two games.

In game two, Ryan Green (Torrington, Conn.) struck out five in 2.1 innings of relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Elms took an 8-1 lead after three innings. The Blazers scored twice in the first inning on RBI singles by Camron Watkins and Brycen Diaz. Diaz added a two-run double in the second. Nason Busca had a two-run single in the third.
  • Albertus scored its lone run of the first three innings on a sacrifice fly by Garabito in the top of the third that scored Adriel Espada (Bridgeport, Conn.), who singled to lead off the inning.
  • The Falcons rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth. With runners on first and second, Smith hit a three-run homer to right field to make it an 8-4 game. It was the team-leading fourth homer of the season.
  • Garabito added another sacrifie fly in the top of the seventh that made it a 9-5 game, but Elms answered with an RBI double by AJ Cook in the bottom of the inning.
  • The Falcons added one more run on a wild pitch that scored Ward.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Busca had an RBI single in both the first and third innings to put the Blazers up, 2-0 early.
  • The Falcons got on the board in the top of the sixth as Rivera stole home on a double steal. Rivera doubled earlier in the inning with one out.
  • Elms erupted for five runs in the bottom of the sixth that included a two-run single by Andrew Ciaglo.
  • Albertus rallied to within one after the Falcons responded with five runs in the top of the seventh. Espada led off the inning with a triple before Garabito drove him in with a single. With the bases loaded, Rivera singled that scored Smith and Garabito, making it a 7-4 game. A sacrifice fly by Anthony Abate (Naugatuck, Conn.) and an RBI single by Ward made it a 7-6 game.

Smith now has 17 home runs in his career. He is tied with teammate Elijah Spataj (Cheshire, Conn.) for third all-time in program history.
