NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College field hockey team continued to make strides in its second varsity season in 2019, picking up the program's first victory to go along with a slew of new program records.

The Falcons' sophomore campaign kicked off with a hard-fought 3-1 setback against Dean College on Aug. 30 at Celentano Field. Albertus' goal came off the stick of freshman forward Joselyn Streeto (New Haven, Conn.), who received an Ariana Martin (Hamden, Conn.) pass into the arc and buried the ball past the opposing keeper. Streeto's goal went down as the second in the Falcons' history.

The season-opening setback to the Bulldogs was one of four straight losses for Albertus to begin the year. The Falcons scored one more goal in that stretch of games, with senior forward Morgan Shura (Wallingford, Conn.) becoming the first player in Albertus history to tally a goal in each of the team's first two varsity seasons.

Despite these early-season struggles, Albertus turned things around in a big way in its first road game of the year. In a mid-week rematch against Dean on Sept. 18, the Falcons got their revenge on the Bulldogs by earning a 2-0 shutout victory. Martin netted both goals for Albertus, becoming the first player in program history with a multi-goal game. In cage, freshman Mikayla Lyston (Medford, N.Y.) stopped all five shots that she faced to earn the team's first-ever shutout.

Following the program's first win, the Falcons concluded the season with eight consecutive losses, seven of which came in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. In its first season in the GNAC, Albertus finished with an 0-8 record.

INDIVIDUAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Throughout their second varsity season, the Falcons were led by an eight-member freshman class, highlighted by the team's star goalie and leading scorer.

Between the pipes for the Falcons, Lyston was one of the most productive keepers in all of Division III. The Medford, N.Y., native led the country with 16.00 saves per game, to go along with a 0.746 save percentage. Lyston helped the Falcons lower its goals-against average from 11.08 in 2018 to 5.46 in 2019.

On the other side of the field, Martin accounted for five of the team's 10 points on the season with two goals and one assist. The forward from Hamden, Conn., netted both goals in the Falcons' 2-0 victory over Dean. She also dished out an assist in Albertus' season-opener against the Bulldogs. Martin's five points and two goals are both new program records.

Shura and Streeto also found the back of the net for the Falcons this season. Rounding out Albertus' point-scorers was freshman midfielder Madison Duranleau (Wheelock, Vt.), who recorded an assist on Shura's goal against Manhattanville College.

Shura highlighted a four-member senior class, as she ended her career with two goals in 15 starts. She was joined by defenders Victoria Torres (West Haven, Conn.), Monica Colon (Newark, N.J.) and Veronica Colon (Newark, N.J.). Torres started 21 of 22 games over two seasons, while the Colon sisters made 13 starts each.

In addition to their on-field accomplishments, the Albertus field hockey team also received a Zag Field Hockey/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Academic Team Award (STORY) for maintaining a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester of the 2019-20 academic year. Individually, Martin, sophomore Gillian Kashuba (Hamden, Conn.), and freshman Lillian Woods (New London, N.H.) were named NFHCA Division III Scholars of Distinction (STORY) for having a cumulative grade-point average of 3.9 or higher through the first semester of the 2019-20 academic year.
