Helwig Sets Career-High, But Field Hockey Shutout By Johnson And Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Samantha Helwig (Northford, Conn.) set a career-high with 17 saves, but the Albertus Magnus College field hockey team lost a 5-0 game to two-time defending Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) champion, Johnson and Wales on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Wildcats took control early and got on the board at the 5:18 mark in the first period as Ava Pontes scored the first of her two goals on a slapshot from 15 yards out to stake them to a 1-0 lead. The Falcons were close to tying the game 11 minutes in but a shot from Paige Scheid (West Orange, N.J.) went just wide of the net, keeping the score, 1-0.

Helwig held the Wildcats scoreless the rest of the way in the first until Margaret Johnson rebounded a shot in front of the net to make it a 2-0 game at the 17:20 mark.

Pontes scored her second goal of the game at 23:02 taking the ball downfield and rolling a shot into the net to make it a 3-0 game, which would remain the same score heading into halftime.

The Wildcats put the game out of reach in the third on a goal from Darian Shepherd at the 38:15 mark

Kameron Marando added the final goal in the fourth in a scrum in front of the net.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Helwig's 17 saves were the most by an Albertus goaltender since their final game of the 2022 season against the University of Saint Joseph when Serena Montague had 18 saves.
  • There were no assists on any of the Wildcats goals.
