DeJonge Scores Twice As Field Hockey Loses To USJ

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College field hockey team lost a tightly contested, 3-2 match to the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.)  in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup on Wednesday evening.

Amber DeJonge (Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored her first two goals of the season to pace the Falcons.

THE BASICS

RECORDS: Albertus Magnus (1-10, 1-8 GNAC) | University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) (4-10, 4-6 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The match started out with the sense it was going to be a high-scoring affair as all five goals in the match were scored in the first half. The second half was a defensive struggle as both teams went scoreless.

Maya Tomko put the Blue Jays on her back early scoring back-to-back goals in the 11th and 18th minute, respectively on assists from Aurelia Barker.

Just five minutes later, the Falcons were able to get on the board as DeJonge scored her first of the season as she took a pass from Gabriella Dellacroce (Woodbridge, Conn.) whose centered pass went off goaltender, Wendy Bowden to DeJonge. Dejonge had an open net and made it a 2-1 game with just under eight minutes left in the first half.

Ariana Komonaj scored for USJ in a scrum in front of the net with just over four minutes left to give the Blue Jays the two-goal cushion once again.

Less than a minute later, however, it was DeJonge again giving the Falcons momentum as she took a touch pass from Melina Tarzia (Stamford, Conn.) from 10 yards out, making it a 3-2 game with under three minutes left in the first half.

It'd be the last goal of the game as the two team combined for just five shots on goal in the second half. Kayla Clark (Avon, Conn.) had the lone shot on net for the Falcons in the second half.
