Field Hockey Closes Season on a High Note, Helwig Earns First Shutout of Her Career

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College field hockey team defeated the Bulldogs of Dean College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest this evening, 1-0.

Maddy Gootjes (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) scored the game winner for the Falcons.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Falcons came out in the first quarter with high intensity, earning four penalty corners along with nine shots. The Albertus defense held Dean to only one shot and one penalty corner. 

The battle continued into the second quarter as the Falcons fended off the Bulldogs' three shots. Gootjes found her opportunity to score for the Falcons from assists by Gabriella Dellacroce (Woodbridge, Conn.) and Melina Tarzia (Stamford, Conn.) at the 28:16 minute mark. 

Albertus earned four penalty corners in the third quarter compared to the Bulldogs' one. The Falcons were able to rattle off five shots, but were unable to find the back of the net.

A similar story happened in the fourth quarter as the Falcons had four penalty corners while the Bulldogs had one. Albertus held the offensive advantage with four shots, but ended the game at 1-0 behind Gootjes' lone goal.
