NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Despite Ella Welton (Cliffwood, N.J.) denying a career-high 24 shots in the cage, the Albertus Magnus College field hockey team fell, 8-0, to non-conference opponent Vermont State University Castleton on Celetano Field on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half saw a slow first quarter with neither side scoring. The Spartans put up 12 shots, while Albertus Magnus put up none. The Falcons blocked three shots as Amber DeJonge (Grand Rapids, Mich.) cut off two attempts, and Welton saved seven in the first quarter.
The Spartans struck seven minutes into the second quarter, with Mackenna Roberson netting a goal from Genevieve Pitts. The Spartans scored three more times to finish out the half, with Peyton Richardson scoring once, and Amelia Wilson scoring twice. Welton denied a game-high 12 saves in the second period.
The Spartans did not let up in the second half putting up four more goals to secure the win. Five minutes into the final quarter, Mariya Helmbold (Bellmawr, N.J.) took the lone shot for Albertus, but it fell just wide of the net. Welton saved three more shots in the fourth, bringing her to 24 saves on the day.
