Falcons Drop Heartbreaker Late to College of Mount Saint Vincent 88-85

New Haven, CT - The Albertus Magnus College Men's Basketball team saw their late second half run fall short to unbeaten College of Mount Saint Vincent as they were upended 88-85.  The Falcons used a late run to go up 82-80 with 1:52 remaining but missed two free throws and a put back and couldn't recover.

After a first half that saw Albertus struggle to find their rhythm, they opened the second half on a 10-0 run making the score 51-48.

The score would continue to be back and forth until Mount Saint Vincent began to pull away late in the second half.  Albertus would respond by forcing a turnover at 5:05 and going on a 9-0 run and taking the 78-77 lead with 4:06 remaining. 

Freshman forward Darius Watson (New Britain, CT/New Britain) buried a jumper to start the 9-0 run.  Junior forward Ray Askew (New Haven, CT/Career) would finish a three point play after an Arshad Jackson (Hartford, CT/Hartford Public) steal and assist to make it 77-74.  Askew would then scoring a running layup after a defensive rebound to cut the lead to 77-76.  A Watson steal and made jumper gave Albertus it's first lead of the game 78-77.  

Mount Saint Vincent guard Sean Caputo (Staten Island, NY/Petrides) made his only field goal of the game from beyond the arc to give Mount Saint Vincent the 80-78 lead.  Watson would respond with a three pointer of his own to regain the lead 81-80.  Jackson would make one of two from the line to give the Falcons an 82-80 lead.

Albertus was led by Askew's 24 points and game high 17 rebounds to go along with five blocks.  Watson scored 24 points including 3-6 from beyond the arc while senior guard Walden St. Juste (Hartford, CT/Bulkeley) chipped in 14.

Mount Saint Vincent was led by senior guard Alvin Pegues (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) and his game high 28 points on 11-23 shooting.  Junior forward Omonya Onwe (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) added 24 points while junior forward Cody Gauvard (Rockaway, NY/St. Edmund's) scored 16 points and had a team high nine rebounds with three blocks and two steals. 

Albertus drops to 3-3, 1-0 GNAC while Mount Saint Vincent remains unbeaten 9-0, 5-0 SKYLINE this season.

Albertus hosts Great Northeast Athletic Conference opponent Emmanuel College on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm.
