No. 23 Falcons Hand Mitchell First Loss with 87-74 Win

The No.23 Albertus Magnus men's basketball team shot 61.8-percent from the floor in the second half of play en route to a 87-74 victory over Mitchell College on Tuesday night. The win improves the Falcons to 3-0 on the year, while Mitchell drops its first contest of the season to move to 3-1 overall.

Darius Watson (New Britain, Conn.) scored 28 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the floor to mark his third-straight game with 20 or more points, while Lemar Larsen (Waterbury, Conn.) led the Falcons with 11 rebounds to go along with 15 points for his first double-double of the season.

The Falcons began the game struggling from the floor as they shot 38.2-percent in the first half and went 0-of-9 in the frame from behind the arc. After going into the break with the scored tied at 32, the Falcons opened the second half with an 11-2 run to take a nine-point lead.

Albertus shot 61.8-percent in the second half on 21-of-34 shooting as both James Jennings (Stratford, Conn.) and Arshad Jackson (Hartford, Conn.) tallied all of their points in the second frame. Jennings, who finished the night with 12 points, and Jackson, who tallied 10, both shot 50-percent from the field.

Mitchell finished the contest 40-percent from the field, while the Mariners went 20-of-26 from the free-throw line to stay in the game with the Falcons. Devonta Mosley hit seven of his 20 field goal attempts to finish with a team-high 20 points, while Joshua Ford added 17 points and seven rebounds. Both Alex Del Rio and Anthony Epps chipped in with 13 points apiece in the loss.

The Falcons held a 45-33 edge in rebounds, while both teams tallied 18 turnovers on the night. Spencer Smith (New Haven, Conn.) added six points and 10 rebounds for the Falcons for his first game of the season with double-figure rebounds.

Albertus will host Lasell College on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. contest. The Dec. 1 match-up will serve as the 2012-13 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener for the Falcons as the Lasers head into the game with a 1-3 overall record after an 84-69 loss at Amherst on Tuesday night.
