Men's Basketball Weekly Preview: Suffolk & Saint Joseph's (Maine)

Last Week: The Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team went 1-0 last week, topping Rivier, 80-64, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Martin Luther King Day. Albertus Magnus erased an early eight-point deficit to improve to 11-3 overall and 7-2 in conference play. The Falcons received double-doubles from their frontcourt tandem of Freshman Shontaey Lovell and sophomore Jaqhawn Walters in the triumph.

This Week: The Falcons have a pair of home league games this week in The Nest, hosting Suffolk in midweek action before welcoming Saint Joseph's (Me.) into New Haven.

Last Meeting: Albertus Magnus scored an 80-70 road victory against Suffolk earlier this season. The Falcons netted more than half of their points in the paint (50) and received double figure showings from three different players en route to the triumph.

Series History: Albertus Magnus leads the all-time series, 20-16, and has taken each of the last seven meetings. At home, AMC is 12-5 against Suffolk and is currently riding a eight-game winning streak.

Scouting Suffolk: The Rams enter Wednesday evening's contest on a five-game losing streak. Dating back to the beginning of December, Suffolk has lost 10 of their last 12 games. Away from home, Suffolk is 3-6 this winter. The Rams rank ninth in the GNAC in scoring, averaging 63.6 points per game and is shooting over 41 percent from the field. Two Suffolk players average in double figures, led by Matt Duquette with 15 points per game.

Last Meeting: Albertus Magnus erased a 17-point halftime deficit to score a 56-52 victory over host Saint Joseph's (Me.) in early January. In the second half, the Falcons outscored the Monks, 34-13. Saint Joseph's shot just 14 percent in the second stanza (4-of-27) and missed 9-of-10 attempts from three-point range.

Series History: Albertus Magnus leads the all-time series, 12-8. The Falcons have won each of the last five meetings and are 7-3 all-time at home against the Monks. 

Scouting Saint Joseph's (Me.): The Monks enter the week coming off an 82-61 setback at home against GNAC foe Johnson & Wales. Away from home this winter, the Monks are 3-6. Saint Joseph's has a balanced offensive attack with three players averaging in double figures led by John Crawley scoring over 14 a game. Quinn Richardson is second on the squad in scoring, netting 13 a game and leads the team in rebounds with just under seven boards a game.

Albertus Notes:
- Lovell was honored as the GNAC Rookie of the Week for the eighth time this winter on Monday thanks to a 16-point, 17-rebound performance in a conference win versus Rivier on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The 17 boards were one shy of his career-best and it marked the sixth time this season he pulled down 15 or more rebounds. The double-double was his conference-best 10th of the year. He currently leads the conference and ranks second in the country in rebounds per game (12.9). Lovell also leads the GNAC and is fourth in the nation in field goal percentage (67.8).
- Walters had a 13-point, 14-rebound performance in an 80-64 GNAC victory against Rivier last week. He shot 5-of-8 from the field and converted 3-of-4 from the charity stripe to score in double figures for the eighth straight game. The double-double was his ninth of the season.
- Albertus Magnus ranks second in the GNAC in scoring, averaging over 85 points per game. The Falcons lead the league in blocks per game (3.8), rebounds per game (43.2) and rank second in field goal percentage (47.7).
- The Falcons are 6-2 at home this season and have won their last three games in front of their home crowd.
