Men's Basketball Cruises to 101-57 Road Victory over Norwich

NORTHFIELD, VT. - Behind five double-digit performances from Davon Warner (New Haven, Conn.), Jacqual Gertrude (Jersey City, N.J.), Tazhon Daniels (New Haven, Conn.), Justice Washington (Hamden, Conn.), and Terry Dawkins (Bronx, N.Y.), the Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team cruised to a 101-57 road win over the Cadets of Norwich University on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action inside Shapiro Fieldhouse.

Warner led the offensive attack for the blue-and-white with a 17-point performance, while Washington, Gertrude, and Daniels netted 12 points each in the victory. Dawkins rounded out the double-digit performances with 11 points.

On the defensive side, Avery Hinnant (Naugatuck, Conn.) posted a team-high two blocks with five rebounds and three points. In addition to their 12 points, Daniels and Gertrude tallied a team-best three steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus controlled the opening five minutes of play as the Falcons kicked off regulation with an early 12-3 lead behind four points from Dawkins and Malcolm Duncanson (West Haven, Conn.).
  • Following a media timeout at 14:57, Daniels scored the next five points, bringing the Falcons ahead 17-3, before Norwich's Jalen Olivero broke up the run with a layup just 15 seconds later.
  • Olivero's layup at 13:20 ignited a Cadets' run that cut the visitors' lead to within single digits, 19-10, heading into a media timeout at the 11:45 mark.
  • Out of the break, Albertus found its rhythm offensively by going on a 13-8 surge, which forced Norwich to call a timeout with the Falcons leading 32-18 with 8:52 remaining in the first. 
  • The Falcons continued to score as nine unanswered points from four different players extended the Falcons' advantage to 23, 41-18.
  • After a made layup from Slade at 7:15, Kohlby Murray broke Norwich's two-and-a-half-minute scoreless drought with a three from the corner.
  • Albertus outscored Norwich, 21-8, in the final six minutes of the first to take a 62-29 lead at the half. 
  • The first five minutes of the second half were controlled by the Cadets, who outscored the Falcons 12-9 to cut the lead to 22, 71-49.
  • Norwich continued to chip away at the double-digit deficit with a 6-5 scoring run, but Albertus answered back with a 9-0 push of its own, extending its lead to 38, 85-47, with 9:34 left to play.
  • The remainder of the game was controlled by the Falcons, with the visitors outscoring the hosts by a 16-10 margin.
  • With today's 101-57 victory, the Falcons have won back-to-back games, both coming against GNAC opponents.

  • The last time Albertus scored 100+ points was in its 102-76 win over Anna Maria College on Dec 08, 2021.
  • This afternoon's 44-point win marked AMC's largest margin of victory since its 125-71 triumph over Lesley University on Nov. 12, 2019. 
  • Today's game marked the 40th meeting in the all-time series between the Falcons and Cadets. 
  • With the victory, AMC improved to 28-12 all-time against Norwich.
  • Warner is now eight points away from joining the 1,000th-point club.
  • Warner tallied a new season-high with 17 points against the Cadets.
  • Daniels' 12 points is a new season-high for the freshman. 
  • Gertrude also set a season-high with 12 points. 
  • Washington has posted double-digit points in three of his last four games.
