Dawkins Scores 1,000th Career Point in Men's Basketball's Road Win Against Lasell

NEWTON, Mass. - The Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team put together a dominating performance on Saturday afternoon inside the Lasell Athletic Center, soaring past Great Northeast Conference (GNAC) foe the Lasers of Lasell University by a final score of 102-83. 

Graduate forward Terry Dawkins (Bronx, N.Y.) led the Falcons with 24 points and became a part of the Falcon's storied history when he became the 19th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark for his career. Freshman point guard Tazhon Daniels (New Haven, Conn.) also had a great game for the Falcons, tying his season-high with 18 points to go along with three rebounds, five assists, and three steals. 

Junior Antonio Bonilla (Tenafly, N.J.) helped spark the Falcons' offense with a 15-point performance, while senior center Justice Washington (Hamden, Conn.) tallied his fifth double-double of the season (11 PT, 13 REB.)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Dawkins started with the hot hand for the visitors as the graduate student forward scored the first seven points, putting the Falcons ahead 7-0 just two minutes in. 
  • On his first basket of the game, Dawkins became the 19th player in program history to join the 1,000-point club. 
  • Back-to-back baskets from EJ Day and Almando Marinez brought the hosts to within three, 7-4, but a 3-0 spurt pushed the Falcons ahead by six, 10-4.
  • A 5-0 run by the Lasers brought the hosts' to within one, 10-9, until a Kevin Crawford (Bridgeport, Conn.) jumper ignited a 7-3 run that gave the Falcons the 17-12 lead. 
  • The Lasers retaliated with an 8-2 push that gave the host's the one-point lead, 20-19, with 12:23 remaining in the first half. 
  • A made jumper from Crawford at the 11:54 mark sparked a 6-0 Falcons' run that extended the visitors' lead to five, 25-20, before the Lasers roared back to take the lead once more, 29-25, following a 9-0 run, with 7:43 left in the half. 
  • Shortly after, Daniels swished a pair of free throws before Bonilla unleashed a scoring spree of his own, netting the next six points on a traditional three-point play and a made three-pointer, extending the Falcons' lead to four, 35-31. 
  • The Lasers countered with a lay-up from Day before Bonilla struck paydirt again, swooshing his second straight three-pointer to give the Falcons the 38-33 lead with just over four minutes remaining in the half.
  • From there, the teams traded baskets to close out the half, with the Falcons taking a 44-37 lead into the halftime break.
  • The teams opened up the first minute of the second half, trading shots before a Lasell trey cut the deficit to five, 49-44. 
  • A lay-up from Malcolm Duncanson (West Haven, Conn.) at the 18:44 mark sparked a 7-0 Falcon run that extended the visitor's lead to 12, 56-44. 
  • Lasell's Day put together a 5-2 run of his own to smother the Falcon's run and cut the host's deficit to nine, 58-49, with 15:55 left on the clock.
  • The Falcons roared right back with a 10-2 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to take a 68-51 lead. Washington and Dawkins each scored four points, while Crawford put in a powerful slam dunk.     
  • The teams traded baskets from there, with the Falcons taking a 77-61 lead into the final nine minutes of regulation. 
  • AMC continued to pressure the Laser's defense, cobbling together a 10-2 run on a layup and a pair of made free throws from Saikwon Williams (Norwalk, Conn.), a trio of made free throws from Jacqual Gertrude (Jersey City, N.J.), a free from Xavier Edwards (Jersey City, N.J.), and a lay-up from Daniels to take a commanding 87-63 lead.  
  • Lasell continued to chip away at the Falcons' double-digit lead with a 17-6 run, cutting the deficit to 93-80.
  • AMC rallied with a 7-3 push to take a 100-83 lead into the final minute of regulation. 
  • A slam dunk from Gertrude extended the Falcon's lead to 102-83 before Daniels finished the game with a steal, giving the Falcon's the 102-83 conference victory.

  • The Falcons are 27-7 all-time against the Lasers following today's victory and are 13-1 in the last 14 contests. 
  • Dawkins became the 19th player in Albertus men's basketball history to reach the 1000-point milestone on his first basket of the game. 
  • Bonilla recorded his seventh straight game of 10+ points. 
  • Daniels tied his season-high with 18 points. 
  • Washington recorded his fifth double-double of the season.   
  • With today's win, Coach Mitch Oliver is just three wins shy of recording his 300th career win.
