HOW IT HAPPENED

  • John Carroll opened regulation with the early 7-2 until a pair of free throws from Dawkins sparked a 9-2 run that gave the Falcons their first lead of the game, 11-9, with 15:23 on the clock.
  • The Falcons remained in control of the game as a deep three from Bonilla at the 13:07 mark pushed their advantage to four, 16-12, but a traditional three-point play from John Carroll's Chase Toppin cut the deficit to one, 16-15.
  • Albertus and John Carroll would go on to trade baskets over the next few minutes before the Blue Streaks retook the lead and went on a little run that put themselves ahead 31-24, heading into a media time with 7:20 remaining.
  • The Falcons punched back, rallying together a 7-0 run behind three points from Jeyson Slade (Stamford, Conn.) and four points from Malcolm Duncanson (West Haven, Conn.) to knot the game at 31-31.
  • Both teams traded free throws and buckets, and the Falcons snagged a late first-half lead at 37-36 following a made layup from Slade with 2:27 left in the half.
  • However, the Blue Streaks closed out the first half on a 10-0 run to take a nine-point, 46-37, lead at the half.
  • Albertus cut John Carroll's lead to as few as five with 12:59 minutes left in the final frame on a made layup from Washington, but a late offensive explosion by the Blue Streaks pushed the lead to 18, 68-54, with 9:01 left in regulation.
  • From there, Albertus chipped away at the double-digit deficit and found themselves within nine, 72-63, on a layup from Kevin Crawford (Bridgeport, Conn.) at the 6:20 mark.
  • Despite the late comeback by the Falcons in the final two minutes of play, John Carroll proved to be too much, earning the first-round victory and will face Oswego State tomorrow evening.
