Men's Basketball Suffers First Loss At Hands Of No. 7 Keene State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team suffered its first defeat of the season, a 94-77 loss to No. 7 Keene State at The Nest on Tuesday evening. 

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak to open the season.

  • HOW IT HAPPENED
    Keene State jumped out to a 16-7 lead over the first 4:17 of the first half after a three from Taheem Dupree. The Falcons scored the next six points, including four from Malcolm Duncanson (West Haven, Conn.) to make it a 16-13 game with 14:38 left. 
  • The Owls jumped back up 22-15, but a 10-2 run led by six points from  Jeyson Slade (Stamford, Conn.) put the Falcons ahead, 25-24 almost halfway through the first half.
  • The game stayed a one-possession affair for the next five minutes until a three from Spencer Aronson and a layup from Mason Jean Baptiste put Keene up 40-35. Justice Washington (Hamden, Conn.) scored four of the final six points of the half for Albertus but Keene took a 49-45 lead at the half. Washington finished with 12 points in the first half. Octavio Brito had 14 to pace Keene State in the first 20 minutes.
  • Albertus and Keene were neck and neck over the first nine minutes of the second half as the Falcons took two one-possession leads, going up 58-57 on a jump shot from Tazhon Daniels at the 13:24 mark and up by two at 61-59 after a layup from Slade. Tazhon Daniels (New Haven, Conn.) scored nine of the first 16 points for Albertus in the second half.
  • Keene State regained the lead less than a minute later on a pair of free throws by Octavio Brito and eventually went up 69-63 before an offensive rebound and put back by Washington made it a four point game again.
  • It was the closest the Falcons would get the rest of the way, as Keene State went on a 16-7 run over the next 5:15 to take an 85-72 lead as Jeff Hunter and Dupree led the charge for the Owls. The Owls were able to pull away over the final minutes to get the win.
