Monstrous Second Half Gives Men's Basketball GNAC Win Over Dean

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Three Albertus Magnus College men's basketball players scored at least 20 points, and the Falcons scored 63 points in the second half in a 105-77 drubbing of Dean College in the team's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) home opener.

Justice Washington (Hamden, Conn.) scored 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. Antonio Bonilla (Tenafly, N.J.) scored 21 points on seven three-pointers and Jayquan Kirkland (Stratford, Conn.) came off the bench to score 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting.

The win was the largest margin of victory this season for the Falcons and the team's third straight win.

Albertus never trailed in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It took 2:30 for a team to get on the board before the Falcons scored on back-to-back possessions on layups from Tazhon Daniels and Kevin Crawford to take a 4-0 lead early. Albertus didn't allow Dean to score until the 16:48 mark of the first half.
  • Albertus would take an 11-4 lead as Washington scored four straight. Dean cut the deficit to 18-15 after a layup and free throw from Charles Walker with 11:42 left in the first half. 
  • The game would never get closer than three points as Bonilla hit four straight three-pointers as well as threes from  Kirkland and Kevin Crawford to give Albertus the 35-21 lead with seven minutes left in the first.
  • The game was scoreless for the final 1:56 of the first half as the Falcons led 42-30 into halftime. Bonilla scored 12 points in the first half on four threes. Washington had seven points and five rebounds and Kirkland scored eight, including two threes.
  • Albertus took a 52-36 lead at the 16:41 mark of the second half, led by threes from Daniels and Bonilla.
  • Dean trimmed the Albertus lead to 54-46 with 14:55 behind eight points from Tommy Huynh. However, the Falcons rattled off 13 straight points as Kirkland scored six straight to give Albertus the 67-46 lead with 11:17 left.
  • After Deon Blakemore Jr. helped pull the Bulldogs back to an 82-65 deficit, once again the Falcons would go on a large run, this time 11-0 to take an insurmountable 93-65 lead after a dunk from Deivone Tanksley (Hartford, Conn.) at the 4:43 mark.
  • Albertus hit seven threes in the second half, including three more from Bonilla and two more from Kirkland. Albertus outrebounded Dean, 36-16 in the second half, including 19-4 on the offensive boards. The Falcons also took 18 more shots in the second half (49-31) than Dean

NOTEWORTHY

  • The 14 three-pointers were a season-high, surpassing the 13 they had in a win over Lehman.
  • It is the second game the Falcons have cleared 100 points on the season. They scored 107 against Lehman.
  • The Falcons outrebounded the Bulldogs, 56-35. The 56 rebounds, including 26 offensive rebounds were the most this season for Albertus. 
  • Led by Kirkland, the Falcons had 44 bench points, a season-high.
  • Kirkland's 20 points were a career-high.
  • It was the sixth double-double for Washington and the second time he has grabbed 17 rebounds in a game this season.
  • Albertus remains in first place in the GNAC.
