Six Players Score In Double Figures As Men's Basketball Defeats Southern Maine

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team had six players score in double figures in a 97-85 win over the University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon at The Nest.

Tazhon Daniels led all Falcons with 23 points. Justice Washington (Hamden, Conn.) had a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds as did Deivone Tanskley (Hartford, Conn.) who finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Malcolm Duncanson (West Haven, Conn.) and Anotnio Bonilla (Tenafly, N.J.) and Kevin Crawford scored ten.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Southern Maine took a 10-6 lead less than four minutes into the game and led by as much as 17-11 seven minutes into the game
  • Albertus took its first lead of the game at 19-17 at the 10:42 mark  after scoring eight straight points, including threes from Bonilla and Jayquan Kirkland.
  • The two teams stayed within one possession of each other the rest of the way as the teams swapped leads nine times in the final ten minutes of the first half.
  • Duncanson gave Albertus a spark off the bench, scoring 11 of points and while grabbing five rebounds during the first half. The Huskies took a small 40-39 lead at the half after a layup from Cody Hawes just before the buzzer. 
  • Tanksley, Washington and Bonilla each scored six points in the first half.
  • Albertus wasted little time taking control of the game in the second half, taking a 41-40 lead 13 seconds in on a layup from Washington.
  • The Falcons led 51-48 just over four minutes into the second half and then rattled off eight straight points to take their first double-digit lead of the game at 59-48 with 14:07 remaining. Washington capped the run on a traditional three-point play, grabbing an offensive rebound and laying it back up while getting fouled.
  • Albertus maintained its double-digit lead and extended it to 71-55 on a layup from Duncanson.
  • A layup from Tommy Whelan cut the Albertus lead to 73-62 with 8:05 remaining, but four straight, including a three from Daniels put the Falcons up 77-62.
  • A three-pointer from Justin Allen of Southern Maine made it a ten-point game with 4:43 left, but it'd be the closest the Huskies got the rest of the way.
  • The Falcons led by as much as 17 points and closed out the Huskies.

NOTEWORTHY

  • The meeting was the first all-time between the two teams.
  • The 58 second half points were the second most second half points in a game this season for Albertus.
  • Washington's double-double was the seventh of the season. It was also the third time this season he's had at least 15 rebounds in a game.
  • The Falcons scored a season-high 54 points in the paint.
  • The Falcons 50 percent field goal shooting was a season-high.
  • Albertus finished with 25 assists, the second most in a game this season.
  • Albertus still sits in first place in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.
