Daniels' Buzzer Beater Three Caps Off Thrilling Men's Basketball Victory at Emerson For First Win

BOSTON, Mass. —  Ta'zhon Daniels (New Haven, Conn.) hit a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team to its first win of the season over Emerson College, 68-65 on Wednesday evening.

After a timeout with 1.5 seconds remaining, Deivone Tanksley (Hartford, Conn.) threw a full court pass to Rodrick Pearson (Hartford, Conn.) at the opposite free throw line before passing it to Daniels' who buried the three as the horn went off.

Daniels finished the game with 12 points to go with four rebounds, three assists, a pair of steals and one block. Pearson recorded career-highs in points (13), rebounds (5) and blocks (3), while Tanksley registered his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 boards, along with an assist and a steal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Emerson opened the first half with five unanswered points before back-to-back layups and a free throw by Tanksley knotted the game at 5-5 through the opening five and a half minutes.
  • Pearson tied the game at seven off a jumpshot with the assist from Ray Ford, Jr. (Jersey City, N.J.), followed by consecutive layups by Pearson to pad the Falcons' lead by four at 11:45 in the first half. 
  • The teams traded points across six minutes of action until a 16-8 Albertus run closed out the half for the 42-33 Falcons' advantage. A three-point bucket by Ford sparked the scoring stretch for the visitors. On the next possession, Ford grabbed the defensive board off a missed three-pointer by Jacob Armant, followed by a jumpshot off the hands of Lennox Serrano (Waterbury, Conn.) put the Falcons' up, 31-25. Emerson's Roman Leraris connected for two points, but the Falcons continued to battle during the run with a three-pointer by Yayo Rodriguez (Hartford, Conn.) and a jumper by Ford to grow the lead to 38-29. Pearson capped off the run with a jumper and a tip-in to maintain the visitors lead going into the break.
  • Albertus continued to build momentum to start the second half as Daniels hit a three followed by a jumper from Tanksley to grow the lead to 49-33 less than two minutes in. 
  • The Lions chipped away at the deficit throughout the next 12 minutes, going on a 23-9 run to get to within two points at 58-56 with 6:07 remaining. The Lions scored eight straight to end the run, the final five coming from Trevor Arico. Free throws from Tanksley and a Daniels' jumpshot kept the Falcons' up, 62-56, with 5:19 left on the clock.
  • With a minute and a half remaining in the second half, Emerson mustered a rally with a 10-3 run to knot the game at 65-65 with 1:33 left. Guillermo Gasset Ruiz scored the final five points for the Lions during the run.
  • Arico attempted a layup with 0:01 on the clock, but a block and defensive board by Pearson gave Albertus the stop to call a timeout, which allowed time for the game-winning three by Daniels as the clock struck 0:00.
