Men's Basketball Sets Program Record In Trouncing Of Colby-Sawyer In GNAC Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn.  The Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team set a program record after defeating Colby-Sawyer, 116-56 on Saturday in the team's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener in The Nest.

The 60-point margin of victory was the largest in school history as the Falcons extended their winning streak to three games.

Ta'zhon Daniels (New Haven, Conn.) scored 32 points, while Ray Ford, Jr. (Jersey City, N.J.) notched a 27 points, which were career-highs for both players.

The Falcons never trailed through regulation and it was the second lowest points allowed this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead over the Chargers following a layup by Avery Hinnant (Naugatuck, Conn.) to open the contest and back-to-back buckets by Ford. Sean Peterson opened the scoring for Colby-Sawyer to knot the game at 2-2 at the 18:45 mark, for the only tie of the contest, but the visitors never held the lead.
  • The Falcons responded and went on a 10-0 run with eight points by Daniels as Albertus increased its lead to 16-4 with 14:21 remaining.
  • The Falcons continued to dominate on the offensive end and extended their lead nineteen points with 9:26 left in the opening half. The scoring run was capped off by a jumper from Daniels and a dunk by Rodrick Pearson (Hartford, Conn.) off his defensive board and an assist by Ford.
  • Peterson narrowed the gap to 17, but consecutive three-pointers by Ford and Daniels extended the hosts lead, 42-13 with 7:10 on the clock.
  • Chaz Culllum contributed five points to help trim the Falcons' lead, but the visitors couldn't close the game as the home team took a commanding 55-20 lead heading into halftime. Albertus allowed just one field goal over the final six minutes. Daniels outscored the Chargers himself as he had 23 points in the first half on 8-for-11 shooting.
  • Colby-Sawyer opened the scoring in the second half with a driving layup by Brady Rogers followed by a made free throw by Cha'Mar Martin.
  • The team traded buckets early in the second half with Cullum hitting back-to-back shots followed by Rogers knocking down a three-pointer.
  • The Falcons continued to pour on the offense with hot shooting as Daniels, Ford, Jr. and Jayquan Kirkland each hit three-pointers as Albertus went ahead 76-40 with 11:50 left.
  • Ford, Jr. hit three three-pointers in the second half and Albertus shot 6-for-9 from deep in the final 20 minutes as the Chargers were unable to get close. Albertus shot 61.1 percent (22-36) from the field in the second half.
  • The Falcons held the Chargers to just two points over the final 4:50 of the game.

  • It was the most points the Falcons have scored since their 128-74 win over CSC on February 21, 2023.
  • The Falcons shot a season-best 60.0 percent from the field.
  • Albertus went 12-for-23 from three, which were the most threes made in a game this season.
  • Albertus dominated the boards with a season-high 49 and allowing just 31 to the Chargers.
  • Daniels has earned double figures in points in four-straight games and has scored more than 20 points five times this season.
