Men's Ice Hockey Sets Single-Season Record for Wins; Falcons Hold off AMCATS

NEW HAVEN, Conn. –  The Albertus Magnus College men's ice hockey team set the program record for most wins in a season following Saturday's 2-1 victory over the Anna Maria College AMCATS. 

Charles Risk (Medicine Hat, Alberta) and Cameron Weitzman (Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec) scored goals for the blue-and-white. At the same time, Harley Michaels (Kirkland, Quebec), Alex Gagnon (Montreal, Quebec), and Aidan Patterson (Redondo Beach, Calif.) picked up an assist. 

Joseph Giacobbo (Deptford, N.J.) started in goal for the Falcons and delivered a strong performance that included 21 saves on 22 shot attempts. With tonight's win, Giacobbo is now 4-3-1 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Despite outshooting the AMCATS by a 19-3 margin in the first period, Albertus and Anna Maria were tied at zero heading into the first intermission.
  • Albertus kicked off the scoring at the 9:04 mark in the second period as Risk found the back of the net, following a pass from both Michaels and Gagnon, for his fifth goal of the season on a four-on-four opportunity. 
  • Solid defensive work by the Falcons kept the AMCATS to only eight shot attempts over the remainder of the period to maintain their one-goal advantage at the end of the second.
  • Anna Maria came out with a vengeance as the AMCATS outshot the Falcons by a 15-8 margin over the first 10 minutes of the third.
  • The AMCATS Samson Mouland capitalized offensively by slipping one past the Falcon keeper to tie the game a 1-1 at the 10:25 mark. 
  • Following a face-off win by the Falcons, Patterson found an open Weitzman, who put the puck in the top left corner of the net for the game-winning goal with under four minutes left to play.

  • The Falcons outshot the AMCATS by a 44-22 margin in today's contest. 
  • AMC was whistled for five penalties, compared to Anna Maria, who had nine. 
  • The Falcons went 0-for-4 on the power play, while the AMCATS went 0-for-1. 
  • The blue-and-white won the battle in the face-off circle, 36-28.
  • Gagnon led the offensive attack with 10 shots, followed by Owen Allan (Ancaster, Ontario) with eight shots. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • The win puts the Falcons at 17-6-1, setting a new program record for most victories in a season. 
  • Albertus is 2-2-1 all-time against Anna Maria College. 
  • Weitzman has tallied three points (1 G, 2 A) in his last two games. 
  • Patterson has recorded a point in back-to-back games. 
  • Gagnon has logged an assist in five straight games and is up to a team-leading 32 points (13 G, 19 A) for the season. 
  • Giacobbo secured his fifth game of the season with 20+ saves.

The men's ice hockey team concludes the 2022-23 regular season on Sunday, February 5th, with a home contest against the Golden Wolves of Alvernia University. Puck drop is set for 4 PM at the Ralph Walker Skating Rink.
