New Haven, Conn. – Despite a four goal performance from junior Jack Kerner (Merrick, N.Y.), the Albertus Magnus College men's lacrosse team was edged by Saint Joseph's College (Me.), 17-11, on Friday evening in a GNAC showdown at Celentano Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Albertus Magnus and Saint Joseph's battled over the first 15 minutes of play as both teams were tied 4-4 heading into the second period. Kerner led the Falcons' offensive unit scoring three goals, including a man-up goal with 21 seconds left to tie the game at 4-all.
Just 23 seconds into the second, Saint Joseph's Matt Donnell was able to find the back of the net for his first goal of the game before Austin Kozak (West Haven, Conn.) tied the game for the fifth time, 5-5, two minutes later. However, the Monks would close out the period with a 3-1 run to hold a 8-6 lead at the half.
Similar to the second, Saint Joseph's scored the first goal of the period and Albertus Magnus answered back with goal from James May (Branford, Conn.) at the 7:39 mark. Michael Finn would pushed the visitors' lead to four, 11-7, following back-to-back goals three minutes apart. Brennan Moore (Meriden, Conn.) would cut the lead to three, 11-8, but the Falcons would trail 12-8 entering the final 15 minutes of regulation.
The Falconcs came out firing on all cylinders scoring three straight unanswered goals to cut the Monks' lead to within one, 12-11. However, Saint Joseph's sealed the conference win scoring five straight goals to lead the team to victory.
FINAL STATS
- In net, goalkeeper John Brunetti (West Haven, Conn.) recorded 17 saves for the Falcons as well as fell to 1-1 on the season.
- The Monks were led offensively by Michael Finn who scored six goals as well as collected two assists and five ground balls.
- Greg Buck (Berlin, Conn.) and May chimed in with two goals and an assist apiece.
- The Falcons were 31-of-36 in clear attempts as well as went 19-of-31 in face offs.
- Saint Joseph's held a 47-34 edge in shot attempts.
- Albertus Magnus posted 58 ground balls while the Monks collected 51.
