Men’s Lacrosse Extends Winning Streak to Six Games in 14-5 Victory over SUNY Purchase

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Behind four hat trick performances, the Albertus Magnus men's lacrosse team recorded its sixth consecutive win of the 2023 season following Wednesday night's 14-5 non-conference victory over SUNY Purchase.

Matthew Hutchings (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) recorded a team-high four goals in the victory, while Jon Olson (Bellmore, N.Y.), Zaheim Wilkins (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and Bailey Kirwin (Barrie, Ontario), notched three goals apiece. Olson also led the team in assists with seven.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Falcons put the first point on the board when Olson found Kirwin at the 13:32 minute mark. 
  • After ten scoreless minutes, the Falcons struck again with two back-to-back goals by Olson and Hutchings to finish the first period with a 3-0 advantage over the Panthers.
  • The Falcons registered two goals in the second period. Kirwin found the back of the net off a pass from Olson for his second goal of the game, while 41 seconds later, Hutchings scored his second from a pass by Wilkins. 
  • Purchase closed out the second quarter with an unassisted goal by Quran Langston at the 8:53 mark to finish out the half, 5-1.
  • Albertus kicked off the third quarter with a goal by Wilkins, assisted by Derek Ralston (Guilford, Conn.).
  • Purchase found its offensive stride in the third when the Panthers scored three consecutive goals in the last 7:38 of the quarter to edge the Falcons' advantage to two, 6-4. 
  • The Falcons ramped up the scoring in the fourth when Hutchings and Wilkins notched their second goal in the opening minute.
  • Kirwin and Olson recorded hat tricks when they notched back-to-back goals at the 11:53 and 10:40 marks, respectively.
  • Shakim Carr pushed between the pipes to score the Panthers' final goal of the game with 7:16 on the clock, trimming the score to five, 10-5.
  • The Falcons capitalized on their scoring chances in the final six minutes as Hutchings registered his fourth and final goal, Wilkins and Olson each recorded a third goal for a hat trick, and Ralston scored the Falcons' final goal of the game with 55 seconds on the clock.
  • After 60 minutes of play, the Falcons edged out the Panthers with a 14-5 scoreline.

The men's lacrosse team resumes Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday, March 25, as the Falcons travel to Rivier University. The face-off is set for 1 PM.
