Men's Soccer Weekly Preview: Westfield State & Suffolk

Last Week: The Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team began the fall campaign by posting a 1-1 mark in a pair of non-conference contests last week. In the first game of the fall, Albertus Magnus dropped a back-and-forth affair at Regis. The high-scoring contest saw three different Falcons find the back of the net with freshman Brayan Lucero recording a pair of assists. In the home opener against Brooklyn College over the weekend, Albertus Magnus once again saw three different players score and sophomore goalkeeper Joe Russo posted a shutout en route to a 3-0 triumph. Versus the Bulldogs, Alexis Garcia-Romero picked up two assists. Through the first two games juniors Justyn Broderick and Ritchy Jean Pierre lead the Falcon attack with two goals and one assist apiece.

This Week: The Falcons have a pair of home contests this week, hosting Westfield State in non-conference midweek action before opening Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday against Suffolk.

Last Year Versus the Rams: Last season, the Falcons blanked Suffolk, 4-0, in Boston with four different players scoring. All four goal scorers from the contest return for Albertus Magnus as Broderick, Jean Pierre, Zapata and Matt Mueller all netted tallies against the Rams.

NOTES:
- Lucero was named the GNAC Rookie of the Week on Tuesday as announced by the league office. In the first installment of the conference's weekly awards in the fall of 2016, Lucero becomes the first Falcon freshman to earn league-wide distinction since Matt Stoll in September of 2014.
- Broderick and Jean Pierre lead the team with five points through the first two games with two goals and one assist apiece. In the season opener, Broderick scored a marker to go along with a helper for the Falcons. In his second start of the fall, he opened the scoring and potted the eventual game-winner in a 3-0 shutout versus Brooklyn College at home. Last time out, Jean Pierre had a goal and an assist.
- Lucero racked up two assists as the Albertus Magnus men's soccer team went 1-1 last week in non-conference action. In the season opener versus Regis, Lucero assisted on two of the three Falcons tallies. Both of his helpers came off corner kicks.
- In net, Joe Russo is 1-1 with a .692 save percentage and a 2.00 goals-against average in 180 minutes of action. Last time out, Russo made six saves to earn his first clean sheet of the season and the third shutout of his young career.
