Men's Soccer Suffers Home Loss to League-Leading Johnson & Wales

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team was held scoreless by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) leaders, as Johnson & Wales University secured a 2-0 victory at Celentano Field on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wildcats took the early 1-0 lead with a goal from Riley McNicholas in the 16th minute. On a free-kick right on the edge of the box, JP Rioux tipped the ball to McNicholas, who rocketed it just over the Albertus' keeper's hands into the goal.

Johnson & Wales clung to this lead for the remainder of the first half, as neither team scored to close out the stanza. In the opening half, the Falcons trailed the Wildcats in shots, 8-3. Albertus' lone shot on goal was from Declan Ryan (Hamden, Conn.) on a header in the 31st minute, but the opposing keeper ultimately saved it.

The Wildcats added an insurance goal in the 78th minute. Nick Gutekunst headed a cross from Alexander Pane past the Albertus goalie to secure the 2-0 victory.

In the second half, Albertus tallied five shots with one being on goal. Diogo Cruz (Naugatuck, Conn.) registered the Falcons' one shot on goal.

In goal, Garfield Robinson (West Haven, Conn.) played all 90 minutes and made five saves.

UP NEXT
The Falcons return home to Celentano Field for the final time in the 2019 regular season on Saturday, Oct. 26, to play Anna Maria College at 1 p.m. This weekend's bout will serve as Albertus' Senior Day, as the team will recognize its five graduating players.
