NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team will host Rivier for the second time this season, as the two teams square off in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) quarterfinals on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Celentano Field.
Albertus finished its regular season 10-4-4 overall and 10-1-3 in the GNAC. The Falcons finished in a three-way tie for first place with the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) and Johnson and Wales. They will be the no. 2 seed via tie-breaking procedures.
The 10 GNAC wins for the Falcons tied them for the most in a season in program history with the 2011 team. Albertus also finished unbeaten at Celentano Field, going 6-0-2.
Albertus won its final three games of the season, including a 3-1 win over Lasell on Saturday, October 26. In that game, Lorenzo Lauria (New Haven, Conn.) scored a hat trick for the Falcons as they closed out their home regular season. The Falcons closed out their regular season on Tuesday with a 2-0 win against Dean. Julius McNeill (East Hartford, Conn.) had two goals for the Falcons in the game.
Albertus will be looking for its third GNAC title in program history, and first since 2012. Albertus defeated Rivier in the 1996 GNAC Championship game to deliver the Falcons their first conference championship.
The quarterfinals matchup will be a rematch of a game on September 14, where Lauria scored the game-winner in the 89th minute as the Falcons won a thrilling 1-0 game over Rivier.
Rivier, seeded seventh, is 7-5-7 overall and finished 5-4-5 in the GNAC. The Raiders advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating no. 10 Lasell on penalty kicks after the teams tied 1-1 in the play-in game on Thursday.
Rivier will be looking for their second GNAC title in program history. The Raiders won their lone GNAC title in 1997.
Albertus leads the all-time series against Rivier, 23-5-4.

The Falcons defense gave up just 10 goals on the season, which tied them for the least amount in the GNAC.

Lauria is fifth in the GNAC with nine goals on the season and tied for fifth with 20 points. Including his game-winning goal against Rivier, he also earned the game-winner against Regis and Lasell.

Johan Stagnaro (East Hartford, Conn.) has 11 points on the season for Albertus, including a team-leading five assists, which also places him tied for second in the GNAC. He had three assists in the 4-0 win over Elms on September 28 and notched four points, which included a goal and two assists against Regis.

Albertus finished with eight shutouts on the season, putting them third in the GNAC.

In goal, David Lucero (East Haven, Conn.) went 8-3-4 and had five shutouts, which put him third in the GNAC.

The Raiders are led by Alejandro Quezada who led the team in goals with five, assists with four and points with 14. He has scored in his last three games, including the lone goal for Rivier in its play-in win over Lasell. He also had a game with a goal and an assist against Vermont State Lyndon in an 11-0 win and had a goal and two assists against Mitchell on October 26.

Thomas Hennessey is second in all three of those categories with four goals, three assists and 11 points. He has two game-winning goals on the season, including one in the 85th minute to defeat Regis, 2-1 on October 2.
