New Haven, CT - The Falcons got a long awaited win over non conference foe Becker College. Coach Palmer said that this was one of the most exciting matches he has ever been a part of. The Falcons won 2 out of 3 doubles matches with phenomenal doubles play by Teo D'Elia (Chesire, CT) and John Fetzner (East Haven, CT) at #1 doubles. The #3 doubles team of James Johnson (Hartford, CT) and Frank Distante (East Haven, CT) played a strong doubles match and pulled out the victory. The Falcons fortunes to a turn for the worse when the Hawks won at #1 singles. John Fetzner played an amazing match at #1 singles, but Charles Heard from Becker College was even more outstanding in the match. The Becker Hawks also won at #4 singles. At this point in the match the Becker Hawks were up 3 matches to 2. Tim Gabbard (North Haven, CT), who continues to make another run at an all conference bid played a great match ousting his opponent at #3 singles. "Tim is playing his best tennis as of late and is getting stronger with every match," stated Coach Palmer. Gabbard's win tied the match at 3-3. Teo D'Elia (Chesire, CT) won in a hard fought match at #2 singles. After winning the first set 6-1, he dropped the second set 0-6. Teo fought back in the third set winning 6-2 and giving the Falcons the 4-3 advantage. The #5 and #6 singles matches di not disappoint. At #6 singles, James Johnson (Hartford, CT) lost the first set 6-1. Johnson switched his strategy taking the second set 6-0. The third set was played on the pure will and determination of both players. Johnson went up on his opponent 3-0 to start the 3rd set and it looked like the Falcons would secure the win. James opponent won the next 4 games, putting Becker up 4-3 in the 3rd set. James Johnson fought back and won the next three games to win the third set 6-4. This was Johnson's first collegiate singles win. At #5 singles, Frank Distante (East Haven, CT) played an outstanding match. Frank won a hard fought match. Frank took his opponent into a first set tiebreaker in which he won 7-6 (7-2). In the second set, Frank went down 2-1 then he broke his opponent and won his next service game which led to a 6-4 second set. "This was an outstanding match to be a part of whether you were a player, coach, or a fan," stated Coach Palmer. The Falcons improve to 2-9, 0-3 GNAC and take on GNAC opponent Norwich on Sunday at Celentano Courts.
