Men’s Tennis Edges Mitchell 5-4 to End Season

The Albertus Magnus men's tennis team used four wins in singles' play to defeat the 2012 NECC Champion Mitchell College 5-4 in non-conference play on Sunday afternoon.  The Falcons improved to 2-10 on the year with the win, while the Mariners fall to 12-2 with just their second loss of the season.

The Mariners, who just earned their fourth-straight NECC title, split the Sunday double-header with the Falcons as Albertus finished the 2012 season on a high note by defeating the championship program.

With the overall score tied at 4-4, senior Tim Gabbard sealed the victory for the Falcons as he picked up a commanding 8-1 victory over Mitchell's Alexander Fusco. Gabbard, who played in his final match for the Falcons, concluded his career in dramatic fashion.

Due to time restrictions, the teams competed in eight-game pro sets for all matches in the second contest of the afternoon.

Mitchell College won No. 1 singles and No. 5 singles as the Falcons took the other four matches. Both Richard and Riker Mitchell (Naugatuck, Conn.) won their singles' matches as Richard won in the third position with an 8-1 victory over Timothy Atkinson. Riker won his second-straight match with an 8-2 victory over Chris McKeon.

Elvis Santana (Bronx, N.Y.) also won his singles' match with an 8-4 victory over Kyle Scalley of Mitchell College.

In doubles' play, the Falcons won the top position as Gabbard and Marcus Artaiz (Hamden, Conn.) downed Andrew Small and Chris McKeon 8-1.

Gabbard finished his senior season with an overall record of 3-9 in singles' play, while producing a 5-7 showing in doubles' action.
