Falcons Edged by Anna Maria 5-4 in Men's Tennis

The Albertus Magnus men's tennis team fell to Anna Maria College 5-4 in a close Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on Saturday night in Paxton, Mass.

The Falcons (3-6) tied the score at 4-4 late before fifth singles was completed.  Despite a valiant effort, sophomore Elvis Santana (Bronx, N.Y.) could not pull out the win as he fell to Anna Maria's LeGrand Haughton 6-2, 7-6 (7-1).

Anna Maria won two out of three matches in doubles' play as the Falcons' Santana and Ahmed Abdulateef (Hamden, Conn.) defeated Haughton and Jose Rivera in a close 8-6 match.

In singles' play, Cerrone Bell (New Haven, Conn.), Matt Mezzei (Wallingford, Conn.) and Abdulateef were all winners for the Falcons.

Bell won No. 3 singles over Ben Chick-Reny.  Bell lost the first set 6-4 before bouncing back and winning 6-3 and 6-0.  Mezzei won No. 4 singles with a scores of 6-2, 6-4 over Anna Maria's Cody Brigham.  Abdulateef, who improved to 5-4 in the No. 6 position and 2-2 in conference action, dominated play with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Rivera.

In second singles, Marcus Artiaz (Hamden, Conn.) battled in a close 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-0) match before falling in the third-set tiebreaker.

The GNAC match took over four hours to complete.
