Falcons Open 2014 with 5-4 Loss to CCNY in Men's Tennis
The Albertus Magnus men's tennis team opened the 2014 season with a tough 5-4 loss to CCNY on Sunday afternoon in New Haven.
Ahmed Abdulateef (Hamden, Conn.) and Elvis Santana (Bronx, N.Y.) led the Falcons with victories in singles' play as they competed in No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Newcomer Dan Constantinidi (North Branford, Conn.) won his Albertus debut with a 6-0, 6-7, 6-1 win in No. 4 singles.
Abdulateef also won in No. 3 doubles with teammate Nick Wiehler (Hamden, Conn.).  The duo shutout CCNY's Qingtian Chen and Arton Oey 8-0 in the Falcons' only doubles' victory.
Abdulateef won No. 6 singles with a pair of 6-0 sets over Oey, while Santana won No. 5 singles over Chen with scores of 6-1, 6-0.
After CCNY took a 2-1 lead with two doubles' victories, the teams' split singles play.
CCNY took away victories in No. 1, 2 and 3 singles to secure the match win.
The pivotal match of the afternoon came in No. 1 doubles when the Falcons' Pete Zacharias (North Haven, Conn.) and Joe Ineson (Milford, Conn.) fell to CCNY's Davis Arroyave and Michael Arias by a close 9-7 final.
Albertus returns to action on Tuesday, March 18 with a 3:30 p.m. match against Anna Maria College.
