Men's Tennis Races Past CCNY in Home Opener

New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College men's tennis team won its 2016 home opener, topping visiting CCNY, 7-2, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Celentano Courts. Dating back to last spring, the Falcons have now won four straight to improve to 2-0 on the year, while the Beavers dropped 2-4 overall with the setback.

Albertus Magnus got off to a quick start, taking two doubles matches to jump out to an early, 2-1, edge. After dropping a close match, 8-6, at No. 1, the Falcons responded with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The AMC tandem of senior Mathew Mezzei (Wallingford, Conn.) and junior Daniel Constantinidi (North Branford, Conn.) earned an 8-4 triumph at No. 2. At No. 3, the duo of freshman Steven Woodfield (Naugatuck, Conn.) and senior Ahmed Abdulateef (Hamden, Conn.) cruised to an 8-1 victory.

In singles play, the Falcons pulled away by winning five of the six matches to earn the win. AMC won three of the matches in straight sets, as Constantinidi, Woodfield and Abdulateef all won in two sets at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Monday, March 28, with a road non-conference clash at the Culinary Institute that gets underway at 1:00 pm.
