Rutgers-Newark Spoils Senior Day for Men's Tennis

New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College men's tennis team wrapped up its 2016 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) slate with a 7-2 setback versus Rutgers-Newark on Saturday afternoon at the Celentano Courts.

With their third consecutive conference loss, the Falcons move to 6-4 overall and 0-3 in league action, while the Scarlet Raptors won their third in a row to improve to 6-6 on the spring and 1-1 in GNAC matches.

In doubles play, Rutgers-Newark took three tightly contests matches to hold an early edge. At No. 3, the AMC tandem of freshman Steven Woodfield (Naugatuck, Conn.) and senior Ahmed Abdulateef (Hamden, Conn.) dropped their match, 8-5. At No. 1 and No. 2 the Scarlet Raptor duos both won their matches, 8-4.

In singles action, the guests closed out the hosts by taking four of the six matches. In his final collegiate home match, senior Pete Zacharias (North Haven, Conn.) cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 straight-set win at No. 1. The singles victory was the seventh of the season for Zacharias to tie him with Woodfield for the team lead. Woodfield was the other Falcon to win his match on the day, netting a 6-4, 6-4 triumph at No. 5.

Prior to the match, the four members of the Class of 2016 were honored for their contributions to the program.

Albertus Magnus closes out the 2016 season on Sunday, April 24, with a road non-conference clash against in-state rival Mitchell that is slated to begin at 2:00 pm. Earlier this spring, the Falcons cruised to a 9-0 win versus the Mariners in New Haven.
