Men's Tennis Wins Third Straight Sister Charles Marie Brantl O.P. Award

New Haven, Conn. – For the third consecutive year, the Albertus Magnus College men's tennis team has won the Sister Charles Marie Brantl O.P. Award. The Sister Charles Marie Brantl, O.P. Award is presented to the Albertus Magnus varsity team with the highest cumulative Grade Point Average from the previous academic year. The team had a 3.39 cumulative GPA for the 2015-16 academic year and saw three student-athletes receive Dean's List recognition.

"Sr. Charles was an advocate for students in the best sense," Albertus Magnus College Vice President for Academic Affairs Sean O'Connell said. "She challenged students to excel beyond their expectations by living out the ideals expressed in the Dominican pillars of study, service, community, and prayer. Sr. Charles was a great supporter of the College's athletics programs because she recognized the power of athletics to enable students to develop the discipline, character, and strategic skills necessary to flourish personally and professionally. Congratulations to the men's tennis team whose performance on an off the court embodies the vision of the student-athlete that Sr. Charles so ably promoted."

During a career of distinction at Albertus Magnus College that lasted nearly 35 years as a professor, Administrative Council member, and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Sister Charles Marie Brantl O.P. was a fervent advocate for the cause of the Albertus Magnus athletic program. Aside from being a tremendous supporter of the varsity sports teams at Albertus, Sister Charles was also on the College's Administrative Council when it voted to construct the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center in 1989.

From her early days as a professor until her retirement in the spring of 2011, Sister Charles was one of the biggest fans of Albertus Magnus Athletics, making her a natural choice to be honored by the naming of an important academic award.

Sister Charles Marie Brantl O.P. was also inducted in the Albertus Magnus College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.

The men's tennis team is coming off another successful spring campaign in 2016. During the year, the squad posted a 7-4 overall record and for the first time in program history Albertus Magnus also had a major award winner with a freshman on the squad being tabbed as the GNAC Rookie of the Year.
