NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Albertus Magnus College men's tennis team swept York College (NY) in a doubleheader match (7-0, 5-2) at Celentano Courts on Thursday and remained perfect on the season with a 4-0 record. The Falcons boast the best opening record since the 2016 season, where the team went 3-0 to start the campaign.
Dating back to last season, the Falcons have won five straight matches — the last time Albertus had a five game winning streak was in the 2022 season.
Albertus dominated in the first match for all seven wins, including first career singles wins by Cody Walker (Boise, Idaho) and Bailey Kirwin (Barrie, Ontario) at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Walker collected a tight singles victory over Dylan Juela with an 8-6 win, while Akezhan Melis (Wexford, Pa.) also earned a hard fought 8-6 win at No. 5 singles.
In the second match, Albertus nabbed the doubles point with a 3-0 sweep with first time duos in each match. At No. 1, Eric Chamandy (Montreal, Québec) and Caden Pattison (Lake Stevens, Wash.) commanded the court with an 8-0 victory. Peter Keese (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Walker tabbed the second partners win at No. 2 (8-1), followed by another 8-1 triumph at No. 3 Doubles by Melis and Kiriwn.
Chamandy and Keese grabbed the first singles points at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, but Gabriela Pirondi secured the first point off the day for the visitors at No. 6 Singles. Juela collected the second point for York (NY) at No. 4 Singles, but Pattison and Justin Arvelo (Waterbury, Conn.) rallied back at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, to secure the win for the Falcons. Pattison earned an 8-0 victory over Abubakar Khamis, while Arvelo won a close match against Michael Martey for an 8-7 win.
