Wentworth Edges Falcons in Five Sets, 3-2

Carlos Torres (Adjuntas, Puerto Rico) dished out a season-high 47 assists as the Albertus Magnus men's volleyball team fell to Wentworth 3-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Tuesday night. The Falcons won the first set 25-22 before losing the second set 26-24. Albertus took the next set 25-20 but the Leopards won the final two sets 25-17 and 15-9 to secure the league victory.

Torres led the Falcons with his 47-assist tally, while adding two service aces and 13 digs. The loss moves the Falcons to 10-2 on the year and 0-2 in GNAC play. Wentworth improves to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in conference action.

Freshman Glenn Johnson (Newington, Conn.) led the Falcons with 20 kills in the match as he recorded 34 attempts on the night. He added 12 digs in five sets played as well. Brendan Charamut (Southington, Conn.) contributed with 14 kills and three service aces, while Douglas DeSousa (Danbury, Conn.) added seven kills and a team-high 14 digs.

The Falcons recorded 54 kills on the night despite the five-set loss, just the second loss of the year for Albertus.

Chase Brinton (Bethany, Conn.) recorded eight digs, two block assists and two service aces for the Falcons as well.

The opening set featured four ties in the early going before the Falcons took a 7-4 lead. The Leopards cut the lead to one three times and eventually tied the game at 10l. Albertus pulled ahead by a 15-12 margin before Wentworth would tie the set two more times. The Falcons scored three of the next four points, forcing a Leopard time out at 23-21. The teams exchanged points to make it 24-22 and the Falcons would prevail 25-22.

Leading 3-1 early in the fifth set, the Leopards saw the Falcons knot the score at 3-all before scoring five of the next six points to take an 8-3 lead. Albertus pulled within a pair at 9-7, but Wentworth used a 6-2 run to claim the 15-9 win and a 3-2 match victory.

Albertus returns to action on Friday, March 16 as the Falcons host their first GNAC contest of the year. Ninth-ranked Rivier comes to New Haven for a 7:00 p.m. Friday night match-up.
