Falcons Earn Key GNAC Win; Defeat Lasell 3-1

Led by 25 kills from Brendan Charamut (Southington, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus men's volleyball team picked up a key Great Northeast Athletic Conference victory on Tuesday night as the Falcons defeated Lasell 3-1 (25-20, 18-25, 25-18, 31-29).

Charamut led the Falcons with his kill tally as he hit .327 on the night. The sophomore added three assists and two digs as well. Carlos Torres (Adjuntas, Puerto Rico) dished out 50 assists for the Falcons as he added 15 digs and three kills as well.

With the win, the Falcons improve to an impressive 17-6 on the year, while they move to 5-6 in GNAC play.Despite the close 25-20 first-set score, the Falcons cruised in the opener as they recorded 16 kills in 36 attempts thanks to the help of six kills from Charamut. Lasell struggled in the first set as the Lasers recorded eight kills and seven attack errors.

Lasell jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the second set and never looked back as the Lasers went on to win 25-18. The Falcons struggled hitting in the set as they recorded nine kills and eight errors in 31 tries. The Falcons also registered six service errors, which aided in the seven-point loss.

Albertus came back in the third set to take a 25-18 win as they fell to 9-4 early in the set before a swing in momentum gave the Falcons the edge. Led by six kills from Charamut, the Falcons tallied 16 kills in 37 tries en route to the victory.

The Falcons took the fourth and final set with a 31-29 hard-fought victory. Lasell opened up the frame with an 8-4 run before Albertus head coach Omar Ramirez called his first time out. The Falcons tied the game at 10 before play went back-and-forth the rest of the way.

There were 16 tied scores throughout the fourth set. After Lasell tied the game at 19 with a kill from Tim Anderson, the Lasers went on a 5-1 run to take a 24-21 lead. Albertus battled back and tied the game at 24 on a Glenn Johnson (Newington, Conn.) kill.

With the scored tied once again, this time at 29, the Falcons took a 30-29 lead on a Charamut kill before an attack error from Lasell's Rocky Khan secured the Falcons' 17th victory of the season.

Johnson finished the night with 11 kills and eight digs, while Chase Brinton (Bethany, Conn.) contributed with 10 kills, two assists and 10 digs. Douglas DeSousa (Danbury, Conn.) added a 12-kill and 15-dig effort for the Falcons as he led his team hitting .360 on the night.

Albertus will head to Boston on Wednesday, April 4 to take on Emmanuel in a 7:00 p.m. GNAC match-up. This contest was originally scheduled for Thursday, April 5 but has been moved up a day due to the religious holiday on Thursday.
