Falcons Cruise to a 3-0 Win at Regis

The Albertus Magnus men's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-19) non-conference victory over Regis College in Weston, Mass. on Wednesday night. 

With the win, the Falcons improve to 8-8 on the year, while Regis falls to 1-8 overall.

Freshmen Justin Tharau (Burlington, Conn.) and Dennis Waibel (Bethlehem, Conn.) combined to lead the Falcons in tonight's contest. Tharau recorded six kills and two blocks, while Waibel dished out 17 assists.

Glenn Johnson (Newington, Conn.) led all players with 11 kills as he hit .429 on the night.  The sophomore added four service aces, five digs and three total blocks. Carlos Torres (Adjuntas, Puerto Rico) dished out 10 assists.

After opening the match with a 10-6 run thanks to back-to-back kills from Johnson, the Falcons extended their lead out to 21-9 on a service ace from Torres. After taking a 22-12 lead, the Falcons finished out the frame thanks to three Regis errors.

The Falcons opened the second set with an 8-2 run before pushing out to a 14-6 lead on a kill by Daniel Valmont (Orange, N.J.). The Falcons went on to take a 24-11 lead before securing the victory with a ball handling error by Regis' Joe Coye.

Albertus once again opened the set in dominating fashion, jumping out to a 12-6 lead on a kill by Ben Spilka (Redding, Conn.).  Regis cut the Falcon lead to three at 16-13 before Albertus put together a 9-6 run to take the final set with a 25-19 win. Chase Brinton (Orange, Conn.) secured the match victory with a kill to end the match.

Matt Brancaccio (West Haven, Conn.) added four kills, while Spilka chipped in with four kills.

For Regis, Claude Jean and Dan Berdichevsky each had four kills, while Angel Aguilar dished out 12 assists. Hitting errors plagued Regis as the team recorded 22 on the night along with just 14 kills.

The Falcons return to action on Saturday when they travel to Mount Ida College for a GNAC tri-match. Albertus will take on the Mustangs at 10:00 a.m. before taking on Wentworth at noon.
