Falcons Drop First Match of 2014; Lose 3-1 at Emmanuel

The Albertus Magnus men's volleyball team dropped its first match of the 2014 season when Emmanuel College defeated the Falcons 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 18-25, 25-7) on Wednesday night in their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener.

With the loss, the Falcons move to 5-1 on the year and 0-1 in GNAC play, while Emmanuel improves to 6-7 overall and 3-2 in GNAC action.

Emmanuel recorded 45 kills in 86 attempts for a stellar hitting night en route to victory.

Emmanuel was fueled by Garrett McGarry and Ryan Kessler with 11 kills and eight kills, respectively. Sean Baxley added five digs and 35 assists on the night.

Douglas DeSousa (Danbury, Conn.) led the Falcons with seven digs, while Glenn Johnson (Newington, Conn.) led the team with 10 kills in 25 tries.

Raul Rivera Rojas (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) added seven kills, while Raymond Torres (Catano, Puerto Rico) dished out 19 assists in the match to go along with four digs.

The Falcons fell in the two first sets of the night before taking set #3 by a score of 25-18. Albertus held a 23-16 lead in the third set before Emmanuel picked up two points but it wasn't enough as the Falcons reached 25.

The Saints opened the fourth set with a 4-0 run before Albertus called a timeout.  Emmanuel extended its lead to 8-1 then 18-5.  Emmanuel pushed out to a 23-6 lead before taking the final set with a 25-7 score.

Emmanuel is now 11-0 all-time against the Falcons dating back to the 2009 season.
