Falcons Split Matches at Mount Ida

The Albertus Magnus men's volleyball team split a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matches on Sunday at Mount Ida College. The Falcons came from behind to defeat Mount Ida 3-1 before falling to Wentworth 3-0 in their second match of the day.

In the first match against the Mustangs, the Falcons fell in the first set 25-20.  The Falcons held a 5-1 advantage early and then took a 7-3 lead on a Brendan Charamut (Southington, Conn.) kill.   The Mustangs battled back and tied the set at nine on an Albertus hitting error.

The Falcons later led 13-12 but a 6-0 run by the Mustangs gave the host team an 18-13 advantage.  The Falcons battled back to tie the set at 18 before the Mustangs pushed out to a five point victory.

Albertus took the next three sets despite a low hitting percentage.  The Falcons were down 11-6 and fought back to tie the second set at 15.  It remained a close set before Albertus broke open the tied ballgame to take a 25-22 win.

In the third set, The Falcons led 9-3 before extending their lead to 11-4 on a hitting error by Mount Ida.  The Falcons dominated until the final points of the set but hung on to win 25-20.

In the final set, the Falcons were down 7-3 early after Mount Ida opened the set with a 3-0 lead.  The Falcons' tied the set at 11 before taking their first lead in the set at 13-12 on a Raymond Torres (Cantana, Puerto Rico) service ace.

Torres finished with 33 assists to go along with a team-high six service aces and six blocks. He added four kills and five digs as well.  Justin Tharau (Burlington, Conn.) added six blocks and three kills, while Raul Rivera Rojas (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) led the Falcons with 13 kills in 32 attempts.

Charamut added 12 kills in 29 tries for a .310 hitting percentage.  Doug DeSousa (Danbury, Conn.) added a team-high 17 digs.

James Ames added 14 kills but had 12 hitting errors on the day.

In the second match of the day Wentworth remained stellar in league play with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-22) win over the Falcons.  Despite a combined 22 kills from Charamut and Rojas, the Falcons fell in the match, dropping to 9-10 on the year and 3-9 in GNAC action.

Wentworth used the win to improve to 20-7 on the year and 9-3 in league play.

Charamut finished the match with 10 kills in 31 attempts, while Rojas tallied 12 kills, just one hitting error, to tally a .440 hitting percentage.  Torres handed out 27 helpers to go along with nine digs.
