Men's Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Match Versus CCNY & Medgar Evers

New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College men's volleyball team swept a tri-match versus CCNY and Medgar Evers on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at The Nest inside the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center. The Falcons blanked the guests in both contests, scoring a pair of 3-0 victories.

With the two wins, Albertus Magnus ran its winning streak to four games to improve to 4-2 on the year, while the Beavers dropped to 2-9 with the setback and the Cougars suffered their 10th loss in a row to fall to 0-10.

In the first match versus the Beavers, Albertus Magnus scored a 25-23, 25-14 and 25-22 win. Junior middle hitter Joshua Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) paced the Falcons in the win, recording 13 kills, two digs and a game-high six blocks. Senior outside hitter Justin Tharau (Burlington, Conn.) also added 13 kills and a match-high .458 attack percentage to go along with eight digs. The tandem of Turner and Tharau combined for 33 of the team's 49 total points in the triumph.

Also in the opening contest, AMC senior Ben Spilka (Redding, Conn.) registered a team-high nine digs and added four kills on the offensive side of the ball. In the middle, senior Conn Filkins (Wallingford, Conn.) contributed five kills, one block solo and one block assist. As a team, the hosts recorded 38 kills, 33 digs and eight blocks.

In the final match of the afternoon, Albertus Magnus netted a 25-22, 25-22, 25-15 win against Medgar Evers. As a team, AMC registered 39 kills, 35 digs and five blocks. Freshman setter Jeremy Ortiz (Bridgeport, Conn.) had another quality match, dishing out 35 assists for the Falcons. Tharau recorded a double-double thanks to a 14-kill, 13-dig performance, while Turner added nine kills and four blocks.

With the win against the Cougars in the nightcap, the Falcons surpassed their win total from last season.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Wednesday, February 24, with a road Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest at Mount Ida at 6:00 pm.
