Men's Volleyball Drops GNAC Match Versus Wentworth

New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College men's tennis team fell to visiting Wentworth, 3-0, on Tuesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at The Nest inside the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center. The Leopards completed the season sweep of the Falcons with a 25-19, 25-7 and 25-16 triumph.

Albertus Magnus moves to 5-13 on the year and 0-11 in conference play with its 10th straight loss, while WIT improved to 18-8 overall and 10-2 in league matches with their fourth win in a row.

Offensively, senior outside hitters Justin Tharau (Burlington, Conn.) and Ben Spilka (Redding, Conn.) paced the Falcon attack with six kills apiece, while classmate Connor Filkins (Wallingford, Conn.) and junior middle hitter Josh Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) both registered three kills. In the middle, freshman Jeremy Ortiz (Bridgeport, Conn.) dished out 16 assists. On the defensive side of the ball, Tharau had a team-high eight digs.

It was a balanced attack for Wentworth as four players recorded seven or more kills. Junior Paul Cooke did a good job of spreading the ball around, registering a game-best 33 assists for the guests. Freshman Brian Drouse had a team-high nine kills and classmate Jake Brown added eight of his own. Sophomore outside hitter Lucas Grevers and junior middle hitter Mike Hansen both netted seven kills apiece. Defensively, senior libero Zach Newhouse recorded a team-leading seven digs, while Brown had five of his own.

In the first game, Wentworth blew open an 11-9 game with nine of the next 12 points as Grevers deliever an ace to give the Leopards a 20-12 edge. Late in the frame with junior Chris Taylor (Bronx, N.Y.) at the service line, AMC ran off three points in a row to pull within five at 24-19. On the ensuing serve, Grevers registered a kill to give the guests a 1-0 edge.

Wentworth opened the second set with a 20-6 spurt to build a large lead they would not relinquish. During the run, the Leopards took advantage of six AMC attack errors and Drouse delivered three consecutive kills. After a kill from Filkins, the visitors ran off five unanswered points to take a 2-0 advantage.

During the third game, Albertus Magnus erased a seven-point deficit to pull within two at 17-15 later in the frame. Two points later, the Falcons would again pull within two at 18-16 following a Leopard service error. From there, Wentworth reeled off seven straight points to win to earn the victory.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Thursday, March 31, with a home conference clash against Johnson & Wales that gets underway at 7:00 pm. The Falcons are looking to avenge a 3-0 setback to the Wildcats earlier this season.
