Nelson Kwok Tabbed as Albertus Magnus Men's Volleyball Coach

New Haven, Conn. – Albertus Magnus College Director of Athletics Jim Abromaitis has announced the hiring of Nelson Kwok as the Head Coach of the men's volleyball team. Kwok becomes the fourth coach in the program's young history.

"We are fortunate to have Nelson join us here at Albertus Magnus," Abromaitis said. "His background and experience will serve the volleyball team well. His enthusiasm and desire will certainly be key in building a competitive program."

Kwok has been around volleyball at the collegiate level since 2008 and he most recently served as the head coach at Mount Saint Vincent. Kwok led the Dolphins to a pair of Skyline Conference Tournament appearances and saw four players earn all-conference accolades. He had a 31-21 overall record and an 18-10 mark in league contests while at CMSV.

"I wish to thank Mr. Abromaitis and the entire Albertus Magnus athletic department for welcoming me with such open arms," Kwok said. "Men's volleyball at Albertus Magnus plays in the very competitive Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) and the key to our success will be to bring in a strong recruiting class each and every year from all across the country. Recruiting will be one of our top priorities."

Before his tenure at Mount St. Vincent's, he served as a volunteer assistant coach at Fairfield University in 2014 and Sacred Heart University during the 2011 campaign. He broke into college coaching in 2008 when he was named the head coach of the men's and women's teams at Purchase College. He was at Purchase for three years and saw success for both programs.

Prior to his three-year stint at Purchase, Kwok coached the varsity boys program at Greenwich High School for two years (2007-08) and the girls team at Trumbull High for two years (2006-07). He has been around the game of volleyball for several decades and his coaching resume dates back to 1975. He coached three squads at Trumbull in the mid-2000s his girls' team qualified for FCIACs. He also led the squad to the second round of the State Tournament for Class LL for the first time in school history. Several members of that team were honored with All-FCIAC selections.

Kwok was a setter on UC Berkeley's USVBA club team from 1977-80 and a setter/defensive specialist at the City College of San Francisco from 1975-77 where he later served as an assistant coach to the women's team from 1975-76. Kwok received his Bachelor's degree in cellular biology from UC Berkeley and an Associate degree in photography from the City College of San Francisco. He is a USAV CAP II certified coach.
