Men's Volleyball Loses to Emerson and No. 6 Wentworth

Boston, Mass. – The Albertus Magnus College men's volleyball team lost a pair of matches in a tri-match versus Emerson and Wentworth on Sunday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Tansey Gym. The Falcons dropped the opener, 3-0, to the Lions before falling to the Leopards, 3-0, in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED

It was an evenly matched first set as the Falcons trailed the Lions by four, 13-9, following back-to-back points by Albertus Magnus. However, Emerson took over on offense and closed out the frame with a 12-2 run to take the 1-0 advantage.

Emerson opened the second set with the early 7-0 lead and found themselves ahead 20-9. The Falcons fell in the second set 25-11.

However, Albertus Magnus threatened the Lions in the third set as the visitors trailed by one 17-16 entering a timeout. However, Emerson closed out the match with a 8-4 run.

INSIDE THE STATS

  • Brian Reyes (Danbury, Conn.), Joshua Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) and Felix Rivas (Danbury, Conn.) led the offensive unit with three kills each.
  • The Falcons recorded a stats ine of 11 kills, nine assists, 27 digs and three blocks.
  • Emerson was led by Mark Piorkowski who recorded a team-high 13 kills, five service aces and four digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Wentworth jumped out to a 7-4 lead before the Leopards rolled off six straight points to make it 13-4. Albertus scored three consecutive points bringing the score to 13-7, but Wentworth went on to take set one, 25-10. 

Wentworth opened the second set on a 9-1 run until a kill service error by the hosts sparked a 7-3 run for the Falcons, closing the gap to 12-8. The Leopards found themselves ahead 19-9 before closing out the set with a 6-2 run.

It was quick third set as the Leopards defeated the Falcons 25-7.

INSIDE THE STATS

  • Turner led the Falcons in match two with a team-high three kills.
  • Sophomore Tyler Revans (Rockville Center, N.Y.) finished the match with a team-high six digs.
  • As a team, Wentworth hit .492 at the net as well as posted 38 kills, 24 digs and four blocks.

UP NEXT

The Falcons return to action on Sunday, March 26th against Rivier and Lasell. Match times are set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
