The Albertus Magnus women's basketball team dropped an 84-80 overtime thriller to UMass-Boston on Saturday afternoon at the Courtyard by Marriott Tournament held at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn.

Lianna Carrero (Hamden, Conn.) led all players with 33 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the floor.  Carrero was unstoppable in the opening half as she scored 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including a 4-of-5 showing from behind the arc.

Her first-half play led the Falcons to an impressive 13-point lead at the 14:47 mark of the opening frame.

The Falcons led 10-0 to open the game until the Beacons' first bucket at the 15:46 mark.  The Beacons' battled back to cut the Falcons' lead to 21-17 with 11:17 to go in the half.

Carrero's 24 points led the Falcons into the halftime break with a 36-32 lead.

UMass-Boston came out of the break knocking down its first two shot attempts to take its first lead of the day at 37-36.  A 21-2 run in the first 6:02 of the second half gave UMass-Boston its largest lead of the contest of 15.

Albertus bounced back thanks to a solid offensive effort by senior Lindsay Karle (Wallingford, Conn.).  Annie Raucci (Milford, Conn.) hit both of her free throws before Karle grabbed a defensive rebound and pushed the ball up the floor where she found Kelsey Proctor (Guilford, Conn.) cutting to the basket. Proctor's fast-break layup made the score 65-56.

A missed three pointer by UMass-Boston and back-to-back blocks by Chelsea Sherrod (Bridgeport, Conn.) gave the Falcons a burst of energy as they hit three-straight three pointers to cut the Beacons' lead to two at 67-65 with 3:50 left in regulation.  During that stretch, Karle hit two of her four total three-pointers, while Carrero hit one as well.

After two free throws, the Beacons took a 69-65 lead before a Karle jumper cut the lead to two.  After a missed UMass shot, Karle answered with another bucket to tie the score at 69 to force the game into overtime after the Falcons could not get a shot off in the final seconds of regulation.

Albertus was held without a field goal in the overtime period and shot 11-of-15 from the charity stripe during the five-minute frame.  The Falcons' free-throw percentage was not enough in overtime as UMass secured the 84-80 victory.

The Beacons' out-rebounded the Falcons 52-37 on the afternoon and scored 22 points in the paint. They were led by Lauren Perra with 18 points and Olivia Murphy with 16 points and 16 rebounds before Murphy fouled out.

Carrero was 5-of-8 from behind the arc in the contest and pulled down five rebounds in 38 minutes of work.  Raucci scored 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Karle tallied 19 points with four 3-pointers. Proctor finished the day with five steals, six rebounds, and seven points for the Falcons.

The Falcons even their record to 1-1 with the overtime loss, while UMass-Boston improves to 2-1 on the year.

Albertus is now 1-2 all-time against UMass-Boston, last facing the Beacons in 2002.

Albertus returns to action on Sunday when the Falcons play Wesleyan in a 2:00 p.m. contest.
