Senior Lianna Carrero (Hamden, Conn.) made history in tonight's game despite the Albertus Magnus women's basketball team falling to Farmingdale State 72-59 in non-conference action. At the 5:31 mark of the first half, Carrero recorded her 1,578th career points on a jumper in the paint to become the all-time leading scorer in Albertus Magnus women's basketball program history. Carrero surpassed the previous record of 1,576 points set by Albertus Hall of Famer Natalia Perlaza '05.
Carrero entered tonight's game needing just nine points to tie the record and 10 to break it and finished the contest with 22. The senior now has 1,589 career points. With 9:19 left in the opening frame, Carrero tied the record with a three-point field goal as she cut the Rams' lead to one at 20-19. Annie Sutila (Bridgeport, Conn.) earned the assist on the play.
With the loss, the Falcons are now 3-10 on the year, while Farmingdale improves to 4-4.
The first half saw nine lead changes as the Falcons fell behind by eight points at 18-10 early on before battling back to get to within one. On Carrero's record-breaking jumper, she tied the score at 24 before Taylor Jagoe (Milford, Conn.) hit back-to-back three pointers to lead the Falcons into the halftime break with a 35-34 advantage.
Albertus shot 42.4% from the field in the first half as the Falcons' largest lead of the contest came just 1:34 into the game at four points.
Farmingdale came out in the second half and outscored the Falcons 38-24 as the Falcons struggled from the floor. On the night, Albertus shot just 35.4% from the field, including an 8-of-26 showing from behind the arc. The Falcons also only went to the free-throw line seven times as they finished 5-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Farmingdale extended its lead to 19 points with 3:26 left in the second frame. The Rams shot 17-of-28 from the free-throw line and they scored 33 points off of 22 Falcon turnovers.
In the second half, the Rams put together a 15-0 run in a span of five minutes to take their commanding lead.
Carrero finished with her 22 points along with four assists in 38 minutes of work, while senior Annie Raucci (Milford, Conn.) added 12 points and 13 rebounds in 39 minutes of play. For Raucci, it was her fifth double-double of the season.
Sutila finished with six points, while Jagoe went 4-of-7 behind the arc for a career-high 12 points.
The Rams were led by Nicky Young who recorded a double-double with a game-high 28 points and 10 rebounds. Camille Romero added 14 points for the Rams as well.
The Falcons open 2013-14 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday, Jan. 11 when they travel to Boston to take on Suffolk University in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
