With the help of 19 points by Abby Young, the Saint Joseph's College of Maine Monks defeated the Albertus Magnus women's basketball team 61-38 on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play in Standish, Maine.

After tying the score at five less than three minutes into the contest, the Monks put together a 6-0 run in a span of 1:34 to take an 11-5 lead.  The Falcons eventually cut the lead to one at 22-21 with 7:27 left in the first half as Lianna Carrero (Hamden, Conn.) connected on a three-pointer.

Despite the comeback, the Monks finished off the half with an 8-0 run to take a 30-21 lead into the break.

The Monks added to their lead in the second half and took their largest of the day on a lay-up by Young with 9:41 left in the contest, which gave St. Joseph's a 24-point lead.

In the second frame, Albertus shot just 17.6% from the field before finished the contest with its lowest outing of the season of 23.8%.  Carrero led the Falcons with 14 points after five-straight contests with 20 or more points scored.

Annie Raucci (Milford, Conn.) added six points, while Kelsey Pendagast (Shelton, Conn.) pulled down six boards. The Falcons were just 5-of-10 from the free-throw line for the game.

The Monks posted a 35.7 shooting percentage led by Young and Morgan Cahill with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Both teams shot under 32% in the opening frame and combined for a total of 19 made-field goals.

With the win, the Monks improve to 15-4 overall and 5-0 in the GNAC. The Falcons fall to 3-17 on the year and 0-6 in league action.

The Falcons return to action on Thursday, Feb. 6 for a 7:00 p.m. GNAC contest at Simmons College. The Sharks are 2-13 on the year and 0-4 in GNAC play this season.
