Falcons Win Second Straight, Hand USJ 64-58 Loss

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus women's basketball team defeated the Blue Jays of the University of Saint Joseph by a final score of 64-58 on Tuesday night inside the O'Connell Center. Natasha Rivera (Ansonia, Conn.) led the Falcons with her second straight double-double (18 pts, 12 rbs), while Caitlyn Scott (White Plains, N.Y.) chipped in with her third consecutive double-digit scoring effort, netting 16 to go along with six rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Blue Jays opened the game hot, going on a 5-0 run on a long three by Silvana Barcomb and a lay-up from Taylor Verboven. Scott got the Falcons going with a lay-up at the 7:30 mark to get Albertus on the board. The Falcons would then go on a 9-0 run on a trio of 3-pointers to take an 11-6 lead, with Alexis Pendziwater (East Haven, Conn.) draining two of the treys. The teams would trade baskets for the remainder of the quarter, with the Blue Jays tying the game at 14-all on a long three by Raelynn Voislow. Amanda Zdru (Stratford, Conn.) then put Falcons up 16-14 with a pair of made free throws to end the quarter.

Albertus started the second period strong, going on a 7-0 run, with Emma Pierson (Branford, Conn.) scoring five points on a long 3-pointer and a made lay-up. The Blue Jays then went on a 9-3 push to cut their deficit to three, 26-23, with just over four minutes remaining in the half. USJ continued to chip away, going on a 4-0 push to take a 27-26 lead on a pair of Barcomb free throws and a Verboven lay-up. A three-point burst from Zdru regained the visitor's advantage, 29-27, before an Anna Chevarella lay-up tied it at 29-all with just under a minute remaining in the half. Jordan Ouellette sent the home team into the halftime break with a 31-29 advantage on a buzzer-beating lay-in.

The Blue Jays began the second half by taking a 37-32 lead before Zdru netted a pair of lay-ups to make it a one-point game, 37-36. Albertus began to swing the game in its favor at the 3:39 mark of the quarter, when Rivera went on a seven-point run with a pair of lay-ups and an arcing 3-pointer to bring the score to 43-39 in favor of the Falcons. A Pierson free throw and lay-ups from Rivera and Zdru sent the teams into the fourth quarter with the Falcons up 48-41.

USJ opened the fourth quarter with a 4-1 push to make it a four-point game, 49-45. A pair of lay-ups from Pierson and Scott increased the visitor lead to 53-45 with five minutes remaining. The Falcons then went on a 5-1 run, with Rivera contributing four points on a pair of free throws and a lay-up to give Albertus a double-digit lead, 58-46, with just under four minutes remaining in regulation. Barcomb answered with a 5-0 run of her own, netting a 3-pointer and a short jumper to bring the hosts within seven, 58-51. The Falcons responded with a quick 4-0 burst on four straight free throws before Ouellette made a jumper to bring the score to 62-53 in favor of Albertus with less than a minute remaining. Despite another Ouellette jumper and a long trey by Amanda Fudge, USJ couldn't finish the comeback, and the Falcons picked up their second win of the year, 64-58.
