Women's Basketball Hits 20 Three-Pointers In Blowout Win Over Dean; Extend Win Streak To Five

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus women's basketball team set a program record with 20 three-pointers and won its fifth straight game in another rout, defeating Dean,  105-42 in the team's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) home opener on Saturday afternoon at The Nest.

The Albertus bench scored a season-high 60 points as Sarah Evangelista (West Haven, Conn.) hit seven three-pointers and led the team with 21 points, seven assists, and six rebounds as she followed up her five three-point performance from the night before in a win over Baruch. Hannah Barrientos (East Hampton, Conn.) finished with a career-high 19 points as did Kiyarah Watson (Waterbury, Conn.), who scored 15.

Jakara Murray-Leach (Norwalk, Conn.) finished with 17 points, and Caitlyn Scott (White Plains, N.Y.) scored 10.

The 63-point margin of victory is the largest this season and the second-largest in program history. The Falcons defeated Yeshiva, 107-42 (65 points) in 2012-13.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons briefly trailed 3-2 to open the game but then scored 18 consecutive points to take a 20-3 lead with 2:08 left. They'd allow just two more points and take a 26-5 lead after the first.
  • Albertus went 5-for-12 from three in the first quarter and hit three consecutive threes to end the quarter. Amanda Zdru (Stratford, Conn.) scored seven points in the quarter, hitting all three of her field goal attempts. Barrientos hit two three-pointers for six points in the first.
  • Albertus held Dean to just 4-for-13 from the field in the second quarter as the Falcons took its biggest lead of the first half at 43-16 after a three from Murray-Leach with under a minute left.
  • Scott and Watson each scored five points in the quarter as Albertus took a 43-20 lead into the half. 
  • The Falcons ended any idea of a comeback in the third quarter, outscoring Dean, 24-9 as Murray-Leach scored nine points in the quarter on 4-for-6 shooting. Cat Thomas scored six to lead Dean in the quarter.  Albertus forced eight turnovers in the third as Scott had three steals for the Falcons.
  • In their best offensive output of the season in a quarter, the Falcons outscored the Bulldogs, 38-13 as Evangelista scored all 21 of her points on 7-for-8 from three. As a team, Albertus hit 13 of its 19 field goal attempts, including 12-for-16 (75.0) percent. Barrientos hit all four of her field goal attempts, including three three-pointers as she had 11 points.
  • The 38 points were a season-high in a quarter this season for Albertus.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Barrientos and Evangelista have set new career highs in consecutive games.
  • It was the second time this season the Falcons have eclipsed the 100-point mark this season. They also beat Rosemont, 100-42 earlier this season. They had just one game over 100 points last season.
  • The Falcons have now won all six meetings against Dean all-time by a win-margin average of 44.3 points.
  • For the second straight game, the Falcons had at least five players in double figures.
  • The Falcons have shot over 40 percent from three in their last two games and have made double-digit threes in the last two games.
