Johnson Earns First Shutout As Women's Ice Hockey Blanks MCLA

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Christmas Johnson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) earned her first career shutout and Briony Retasket (Beaverton, Ore.) scored her first career goal as the Albertus Magnus College women's ice hockey team defeated Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), 2-0 on Friday evening at Ralph Walker Ice Rink.

Gabriella Dellacroce (Woodbridge, Conn.) also scored for the Falcons.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams played to a scoreless draw in the first period as Johnson stopped all seven shots she faced and MCLA's Juliette Barney stopped 11 shots.
  • The Falcons got on the board at 12:16 in the second period on the power play as Molly Martin (Buffalo, N.Y.) fed a pass to Dellacroce who skated in a few feet with the puck and took a shot that went over the shoulder of Barney and popped up the water bottle on the top of the net  to make it a 1-0 game.
  • Retasket notched her first goal at the 4:35 mark in the third as a shot from Martin on an offensive rush came back to Retasket who put it back in to make it a 2-0 game. Johnson stopped all six shots in the period for the Falcons.

NOTEWORTHY

  • The meeting was the first between the two teams, which are both in their first year as a program.
  • Martin's two assists give her 10 on the season, tying her with teammate Kayla Clark (Avon, Conn.) who also earned her tenth assist on the season during the game.
  • The Falcons have scored at least one power-play goal in two straight games and three of their last four.
  • Albertus won the faceoff battle, 38-24, with Isabella Contreras (Surprise, AZ) going 20-4.
