NEW HAVEN, Conn. — In game two of the series, the Albertus Magnus College women's ice hockey team claimed their first win of the season off the eventual game-winner goal by Maddy Gootjes (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) as the Falcons bested the visiting Chatham University Cougars, 2-1, at Ralph Walker Rink on Saturday.

BOX

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams were scoreless through the first period, but Albertus dominated on defense with 27 shots as 16 were saved by Lindsey Batz.
  • Chatham attempted a centering pass in front of the Falcons net, but Molly Martin (Buffalo, N.Y.) intercepted the attempt before skating with full steam towards Batz in the Cougars net and tried to connect on back-to-back tries, but both fell wide. Martin recovered her second shot and slide it across the ice to Kayla Clark (Avon, Conn.) in front of the Albertus bench as Clark quickly aimed for the netting followed by the tip-in goal by first-year Delaney Schlechtweg (New York, N.Y.) at 12:33 in the second intermission.
  • Following a won faceoff by Madeline Sheffield (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), Gootjes recovers the puck from the faceoff and quickly puts it on the net to put the Falcons up, 2-0, at 4:26 in the final period.
  • With less than three minutes remaining in regulation, Lily Schmear put the Cougars on the board off the pass from Morgan Black.
