Martin The Hero Once Again In OT As Women's Ice Hockey Defeats NEC For Third Straight Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — For the second straight day, Molly Martin (Buffalo, N.Y.) delivered the game-winning goal in overtime as the Albertus Magnus College women's ice hockey team completed the weekend series sweep over New England Hockey Conference opponent New England College in a 4-3 win on Saturday.

Kayla Clark (Avon, Conn.) and Gabriella Dellacroce (Woodbridge, Conn.) aided Martin on the quick game-winner in OT. Clark won the opening faceoff and tipped it to Dellacroce who skated around the visitors' net before passing to Martin near the left circle for the tally front in front of the net.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a six-player battle along the boards to the right of Albertus bench, Maddy Gootjes (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) came away with the puck and sent it deep into the Pilgrims' territory. The puck slid unscathed through the neutral zone before Moira O'Brien (Wilbraham, Mass.) retrieved it near the blueline for a breakaway shot but Kayden Lallier-Whissell saved the attempt and but Madeline Sheffield (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) chipped the puck into the back of the net to put the Falcons up, 1-0 just 1:53 into the game.
  • Less than five minutes later, the Falcons tried to get the puck out of the scoring zone, but it was recovered by Jordan Pond in the neutral zone as NEC regained possession of the puck. Pond sent the biscuit to Jamie Blondin near the blueline for a shot denied by Christmas Johnson (Winnipeg, Manitoba), but Sofia Gualtieri connected with the twine off the rebounded shot to knot the game at 1-1 at 6:18.
  • After Albertus dominated time of possession to open the period, a poor pass led to a breakaway opportunity for Samantha Babbitt, who slapped a shot past Johnson to give the Pilgrims the 2-1 lead at 3:13 in the second.
  • Just past the 11-minute mark in the second, the hosts tied the game back up at 2-2 on a high slap shot by Delaney Schlechtweg (New York, N.Y. ). Kendall Conley (Trumbull, Conn.) recieved the puck near the blueline after a shot by Jodi Ostroski (Roseau, Minn.) and drilled it towards the net where Schlechtweg guided it into the net.
  • In the third period, an NEC penalty would prove costly as Martin capitalized on a power-play opportunity scoring the go-ahead goal with 12:18 left in the game.
  • With 3:48 to go, the the Pilgrams played with an extra skater and capitalized with 1:02 left on the clock as Gualtieri took a shot through the five hole to tie the game, 3-3.
  • Going to overtime for the second time in two days, Albertus' first opportunity of the extra period would be enough for the game-winner just 17 seconds in. Martin, yesterday's overtime hero for the Falcons, came through once again with her second goal of the game to hand the hosts the 4-3 win.
