The Albertus Magnus women's lacrosse team had a tough task in front of them on Sunday, March 2 when they played host to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Saint Joseph's College of Maine in league action to open the 2014 season.  The contest served as the Falcons' first-ever varsity contest.  The Falcons dropped a 20-1 decision to the Monks at the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, Conn.

Sophomore Miranda Jassil (North Branford, Conn.) scored the Falcons' first-ever goal in program history with 6:08 left in the first half of the contest.

Senior Erika Blechert (Durham, Conn.) made 16 stops in goal for the Falcons.

The Monks, who open the 2014 season with a victory, were led by Kat Gadbois with four goals on four shots, while Cassie Diplock tallied two goals.  Mary Leasure and Macy Pagurko both added two goals for the Monks as well, while Lizzie Calnan chipped in with one goal and two assists.

Haley Nason earned the win for Saint Joseph's in net as she started the contest before Elizabeth Giacchino took over for her with 10:14 to go in the opening frame.  Giacchino made one save but allowed the Falcons' lone goal scored.  Emma Astbury also came off the bench for the Monks and was the net minder for the final 15:22 of the second half.

The Monks opened the contest with 10-straight goals before Jassil's goal.  The Monks tallied eight unanswered goals in the second half of play.

Saint Joseph's returns to action on Thursday at Thomas College of Maine, while the Falcons will take some time off before heading to Nashua, N.H. to take on GNAC opponent Rivier University on March 18.  That contest is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
