Ellsworth Nets Hat Trick in Falcons' Loss to Saint Joseph's (Me.)

Standish, Me. - Despite a hat trick from junior Kaitlyn Ellsworth (Tolland, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus College women's lacrosse team lost by a score of 17-6 to Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half (10-3 SJM)

  • Three minutes into regulation, Saint Joseph's found themselves up 2-0 after back-to-back goals from Maddy Beaulieu and Kara Kelly, but a goal from Alexis Lape (Bristol, Conn.) cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
  • An unassisted goal from Liz Callahan sparked a 7-0 run that put the Monks ahead 9-1 with 18:15 left in the first.
  • A pair of goals from freshman Madison Neilander (Wallingford, Conn.) and Ellsworth brought the Falcons to within six, 9-3, but a second goal from Kayla Kelly gave Saint Joseph's a seven-goal cushion at the half, 10-3.

Second Half (7-3 SJM)

  • Saint Joseph's opened the second half with five-goal scoring run, including another two from Kayla Kelly, to take a commanding 15-3 lead over Albertus.
  • Neilander struck again for the Falcons scoring her second of the game on a free-position shot at the 18:22 mark following a penalty by the Monks.
  • With the clock winding down, Albertus was only able to score two more times, both from Ellsworth, to bring the final score to 17-6.

KEY PERFORMANCES
Albertus:

  • Junior Kaitlin D'Agostino (Hamden, Conn.) won seven draw controls for the Falcons and picked up a team-best four ground balls.
  • Sophomore Katherin Martinez (Norwalk, Conn.) led the defensive unit with three caused turnovers.
  • Both D'Agostino and Maddy Rowe (Branford, Conn.) picked up an assist.

Saint Joseph's:

  • Kayla Kelly finished with a team-high five goals for five points while Beaulieu also tallied five points for the Monks behind two goals and three assists.
  • Along with a goal and assist, Logan Champlin won five draw controls, scooped up three ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers.
